A temporary memorial consisting of candles, flags, and photos for hockey player Karlis Skrastins is seen in front of the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation headquarters.

Former NHL defenseman Karlis Skrastins (Kārlis Skrastiņš) was one of the 44 people who died when a jet aircraft carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Russian hockey team crashed while taking off on September 7, 2011.

Skrastins played 832 NHL games with Nashville Predators, Colorado Avalanche, Florida Panthers, and Dallas Stars from 1999-2011. In 2007, he set an NHL record for most consecutive games played at 495. He signed to play in the top Russian pro league in the summer of 2011.

I had the pleasure of talking with Karlis during his two minor league seasons in Milwaukee from 1998-99. A respectful and polite man and one of the best defensemen I have seen come up through the ranks.
