The Cimarron Fuel Fabrication Site was a nuclear fuel production facility located by the Cimarron River near Cimarron City, Oklahoma. It was operated by Kerr-McGee Corporation (KMC) from 1965-1975. This was the facility where Karen Silkwood was employed when she died under mysterious circumstances after her union activism and whistleblowing. It is where she was contaminated with plutonium in 1974. She died the same year in a suspicious car accident while investigating alleged wrongdoing at the plant. The 1983 film Silkwood was inspired by Karen's death. The Oscar nominated film was directed by Mike Nichols and stars Meryl Streep, Cher and Kurt Russell.
