James Byron Dean (February 8, 1931 – September 30, 1955) was an American film actor.

This photograph was taken at a Ventura Blvd. Mobil station on Friday 30 September 1955 by Rolf Wütherich, James Dean's Porsche mechanic and passenger. The two would leave moments later at about 1:30 pm heading north to Salinas for weekend races, followed by Dean's 1955 Ford Country Squire station wagon (seen at left in the photo with trailer) driven by friend and movie stuntman, Bill Hicks. A little over four hours after this photograph was taken, James Dean would die in a highway collision and his beloved Porsche 550 Spyder, nicknamed 'Little Bastard' mangled beyond recognition.
