Lighthouse at Formentor

Lighthouse at Formentor

Port de Pollenca, Spain (ES)
When the lighthouse of Formentor was first built, the area was completely undeveloped. There were no lavish tourism resorts or cafes in Puerto Pollensa, and there were not even accessible roads to bring materials to the site. Construction on the lighthouse started in 1860, and it took a full three years before it was complete. Overseeing the design and construction of this beautiful lighthouse was Emili Pou, a man who was officially titled Head Engineer of Public Works on the Balearic Islands. The lighthouse was a very expensive undertaking, and it ended up costing more than 1.3 million reals. Part of this extraordinary expense is due to the fact that almost all the materials had to travel to the building site by sea thanks to a lack of roads.
