The Guildhall has been used as a town hall for several hundred years and is still the ceremonial and administrative centre of the City of London and its Corporation. It is built on the site of the amphitheater of ancient Roman Londinium: The shape of that arena can be seen in the outline of black paving stones in the Guildhall's courtyard:
