Magadan, the capital of the Kolyma Gulag. This port on the Pacific coast of Russia was founded in the 1930s as the only gateway to the Kolyma Gulag camps. After they had served their sentences, people were not allowed to return to the "continent", but forced to remain in the Kolyma region, mainly at Magadan. The actual inhabitants of the city often have parents who are former victims of the stalinist Gulag system, when not themselves.
