Marcus Island

Marcus Island, Japan (JP)
Marcus Island is an isolated island in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The Japanese meaning of the name is "Southern Bird Island". It is 1.2 km² in area. It is the easternmost territory belonging to Japan, some 1 848 km SE of Tokyo, or 1 267 East of the closest Japanese island, South Iwo Jima of the Ogasawara Islands, and nearly on a straight line between Tokyo and Wake Island, which is 1 415 km ESE. The closest island, however, is Farallon de Pajaros of the Mariana Islands, which is 1021 km WSW of Minamitori Shima.

I lived on Marcus Island from September 1968 to September 1969. It is a place of solitude, comfortable weather, shell covered beaches and scrub bushes of many types. Walking the beach in search of Japanese glass fishing floats (balls) is a gentle pastime after hours and on weekends. The Coast Guard transmitted LORAN-C from the 1,500 foot tower to assist navigation by sea and air through out the central pacific. The Japanese (JMSDF) took over the LORAN-A in 1969 and the USCG left the island in the 1980"s.

The Coast Guard did not leave in the 80's. I served there from 89-90. If I am not mistaken the Coast Guard left in the late 90's. I would have to research that but I know we were there in early 90's.

I was on Marcus from March, 1967 to March, 1968. The CO was LTJG Anderson and XO Warrant Officer Jeter, and before Anderson, the CO was LTJG Peadenpole (and I know that's not how it's spelled). He was a great CO he helped me a lot.
