MiG-15UTI Fagot (bottom)
The MiG-15 came as a great surprise to the Western nations when they first encountered it during the Korean War. It was much more advanced and capable than the West had believed and proved to be more than a match for most Western fighters except for the F-86 Sabre. The MiG-15s engine was a direct copy of the British designed Rolls-Royce Nene engine, samples of which had been bought from England in 1946. The Fagot first flew in 1948. A total of 16,085 MiG-15 were built in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and China as well as in Russia. The MiG-15UTI is the two-seat trainer version of the Fagot. In Poland many of them were rebuilt from earlier single-seat fighters.

A total of 16,085 MiG-15 were built in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and China as well as in Russia. In all 38 different countries used the aircraft.
Shenyang J-6A Farmer (top)
First built 1958 the J-6A is the Chinese built version of the radar equipped MiG-19PF. The Farmer was the first supersonic production fighter in the USSR and in China. Although the first Chinese built J-6 aircraft rolled off the assembly line in 1958 very poor quality control in both engine and airframe manufacture led to the first batch of aircraft being refused by the Chinese Air Force. It was not until 1963 that the first aircraft entered service in the Peoples’ Liberation Army Air Force. While the MiG-19 had a relatively short service life in the Soviet Air Force it remained in Chinese service until the end of the 1990s. Widely exported as the F-6A, Chinese built Farmers have served in numerous air forces including; North Korea, North Vietnam, Pakistan, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Small numbers of them remain in service with several of these nations.
