Nelson Doubleday Jr. is the heir to the Doubleday publishing fortune. He was president of Doubleday from 1978-1986. He was instrumental in the company's purchase of the New York Mets in 1980. In 1986, he sold the publishing company to Bertelsmann A.G., a major German corporation.
That same year, he bought the Mets with a partner and became chairman of its board, in the year the team went to the World Series and won the 1986 title. He sold his share in the Mets in 2002.
