The bridge carries the Norfolk Southern Corporation railroad over the canal. In 1966, this railroad liftspan bridge over the canal was completed by US ACE and transferred to the Pennsylvania Railroad to carry freight trains across the canal. The present level of waterway traffic versus railroad traffic is such that the bridge is kept in the open position, and closed for train movements.
