Oak tree Iron Cross

This memorial of an unusual design honors German World War I soldiers. It is in the shape of an Iron Cross, laid out as a low wall enclosing a grove of 64 oak trees. The cross is located on a hillside to the west of Burgbernheim in northern Bavaria.

The Iron Cross in the trees West of Illesheim were a visual final approach fix for returning Nazi planes during WWII.

Illesheim was a German fighter base, and lining up with the Eastern leg of the cross would be the heading into Illesheim, since the base was flooded on command and difficult to see from the air.

I was always told it was for aviation purposes. During bad weather the cross was low on the hillside and lines right up with the airfield at nearby Illesheim.
