Description:The Mississippi River has been change course such that it will no longer pass through New Orleans and Baton Rouge for many years. The only thing keeping it from following the course of the Atchafalaya River is a system of locks and dams maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The Old River control is part of that system.
