The Philadelphia Union are a Major League Soccer franchise that joined in 2008.

The name Union refers to the uniting of the Thirteen Colonies of which Philadelphia was its first capital. The teams colors of navy blue and gold refer to the uniforms of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The term "jungite aut perite" is a latin term used by Benjamin Franklin in a political cartoon showing the colonies as parts of a snake. The term means "join or die" and refers to the need of the American Colonies to unite with England against the French during the French and Indian War. The symbol and phrase were also used during the American Revolution.
