The cemetery dates back to Saxon times and was bought by Quakers in 1661. It continued being used for burials right up until 1855 when it eventually closed. About 12,000 Quakers were buried here in unmarked graves. The cemetery is now used and maintained as a public garden. Some of the gravestones are still visible at the site.
