Located only 500 m (1640 ft) from Ground Zero, Urakami Cathedral, the largest Roman Catholic church in East Asia, was completely destroyed.

This replacement was built on the original site in 1959, then remodeled in 1980 to more closely resemble the destroyed church.

A remnant of the original cathedral can be seen in Nagasaki Peace Park, near Ground Zero.
