In the centre of Austria's capital, Vienna, lies the remains of an ancient Roman outpost. The outpost dates back to the time Vienna was a Roman settlement and Roman military camp called Vindobona. Vindobona had an estimated population of 15.000 to 20.000.
Many other Roman remains can be seen in Vienna.
The centrepiece of the square, Michaelerplatz, has a rectangular opening showing the foundations of the Roman outpost.
