The theatre is thought to have been built in the 1st century BC and was one of the largest ever built by the Roman Empire. It was abandoned in the 4th century. A fortress was built on the ruins of the theatre in the 13th century.

The theatre was excavated (only partially) in 1980. Some of the steps are visible today. The theatre featured a cavea with a diameter of more than 120 m and it could house 20.000 spectators.
