Nan Madol is a ruined city on the eastern shore of the island Pohnpei that was the capital of the Saudeleur Dynasty until about 1628. Nan Modal means "spaces between", which is a refference to the canals that are around the ruins. The city was orginally named Soun Nan-len (Reef of Heaven) and was a ceremonial and political seat of the Saudeleur Dynasty, which populated Pohnpei's estimated 25.000 people until 1628 (roughly).

The city is now overgrown and partly submerged.
