Salamis is an ancient Greek city-state located in Cyprus (disputed Northern Cyprus). Earliest archaeological findings date back to the 11th century BC. The city was the site of a naval battle between the fleets of Demetrius I of Macedon and Plotemy I of Egypt in 306 BC. Demetrius won the battle and captured the island. During the Roman Empire, Salamis was part of the Roman province of Cilicia.
Several ruins of buildings can be viewed at the site and the most notable structure is the old Roman theatre.
