Ruth Livingston Mills was the great-grand daughter of Morgan Lewis, who was the 3rd Governor of New York.
Lewis had built a small colonial style home on this site, which was later destroyed in a fire. In 1890, Mills inherited the estate and soon commissioned an expansion and significant remodel of the home.
Lewis' daughter, Gladys Mills Phipps, donated the home to the State of New York.
