The plans for the international airport were announced in 2005 but delays due the financial crisis pushed the opening from the anticipated 2010 date to a much later date. In 2010 the British government agreed to pay for the new airport and in 2015 the first aircraft landed. In 2016, the first commercial plane landed.

The location of the air port is elevated and the surrounding bluffs cause turbulence and windy conditions.
