The long road to create a Japanese Garden in Seattle began in 1909, with the Alaska Yukon Exhibition. A Japanese Pavilion with an accompanying garden was built for the fair, which was the seed for regional interest in Japanese gardens. However, it would not come to pass until 1957 when The Arboretum Foundation began raising funds for the creation of the Japanese Garden. Construction began in March 1960 and was completed in four months.
