The most dominant of the many pagodas that dot the riverside city of Pathein in the Irrawaddy delta, Shwemokhtaw stands 47m high; its topmost layer is made from 6.3kg of gold. One of several legends concerning its origin says it was founded by the great Indian king Asoka in 305 BCE.
