The monument is in memory of George Castriot or Gjergj Kastrioti, commonly known as Skanderbeg (1405-1468). Skanderbeg was a 15th century Albanian nobleman who garnered fame for defending the Albanians against the Ottomans for 25 years.

The monument was was created by Odhise Paskali and errected in 1968, the 500th anniversary of Skanderbeg's death. It stands 11 meters (36 feet).
