From 1960 to 1981, all sentences of death in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) were carried out by the Interior Ministry in its jail at 47 Alfred Kästner-Straße, in a residential area of a Leipzig suburb. Previously, all executions had been performed in Dresden. The condemned were beheaded by guillotine until 1968 and by gunshot to the head thereafter. Executions were conducted in total secrecy.
