Stjepan Filipović monument

Valjevo, Serbia (CS)
Stjepan Filipović (1/27/1916 - May 22, 1942) was a commander of the Partisans' Tamnavsko-Kolubarski unit in Yugoslavia fighting against Axis Forces. He was captured and hanged in Valjevo. As the rope was put around his neck he shouted, "Smrt fašizmu, sloboda narodu!" which translates as "Death to fascism, freedom to the people!". A famous picture was taken as he shouted these words with his arms outstretched and his fists clenched. This picture was the inspiration for the statue.
