I've heard reports of lots of places like this in history. It ends up, many of them really did go crazy but not from the isolation. Water storage and collection was critical in these arid locations and a lot of that collection and storage involved lead containers and the like. Many went crazy from lead poisoning that was attributed to the isolation.
