"The Mushroom House in the Black’s Beach area of La Jolla, California is one of those landscape features that you just get used to if you live nearby, but if you’re seeing it for the first time it strikes you as incredibly strange. Designed by Dale Naegle in the 1960s, the house was built for Sam Bell of Bell’s Potato Chips. The unusual design of the house was meant to withstand earthquakes and inclement weather, all while looking futuristic…well, futuristic for 1968, anyway." [weburbanist]

Sam Bell was my grandfather - it's funny that all of these articles are saying Bell's potato chips.....sorry never had any connection there. When I was a kid we would very often come and stay in this house and those are some of the best memories I have. It looked VERY different - no big concrete wall, the windows were different and the elevator made a stop at the house level with a gangplank of sorts over to enter into the kitchen area. It was filled with very modern furniture ala Saarinen & Eames which I never appreciated until I got into design school. I can to this day smell the smells of those cliffs, beach & house and of course nothing better than listening to the waves pounding.
