Accardo, also known as "Joe Batters" or "Big Tuna", was a Chicago mobster and the boss of the Chicago Outfit from 1947 until his death in 1992. He moved The Outfit into new operations and territories, greatly increasing its power and wealth during his tenure as boss.

He bought the 22 room mansion in 1951 for a reported $125,000. It served as Accardo's unofficial command post until 1963, when he sold the home in favor of a more modest ranch home in North River Forest.
