Unidentified Runway

Unidentified Runway

Jenkins, Minnesota (MN), US
This appears to be a completely open runway located in Crow Wing County, a few miles southeast of Pine River and northeast of Jenkins. This landing strip is not outlined on Navteq road maps. It is shown (but only labeled as "Landing Strip") on the 1959 USGS topographic map. Over forty five minutes of web searching has turned up a grand total of nada.

That's a pretty nice runway. Someone likes to fly...

Or more likely, likes to fish...

Strange indeed. There should be Ultraflyte Inc's landing field nearby, but the field that can be found on the published lon/lat location doesn't really look like a proper place to land. Both the location (2 Mi N of Jenkins) and the direction of Ultraflyte's field (NE/SW) is consistent with this field. Could it be so that there is error in the location database?

Listed airstrips, landing fields, etc, are sometimes no longer in aviation use (even though an active record still exists.) Concering Ultraflyte, I can't find anything casually or officially said about them in a web search and no business listing of any kind . . . but the coordinates for their field look to be correct to me. Their runway is described only as NE/SW and there's a faint outline of what that could be plus the length is just about right and it's located off of Ultra Flyte Drive. (I didn't submit a map because there's really nothing to see, in my opinion.)

Anyway, the Unidentified runway in this map is much longer and appears to always have been -- dating back to the topographic map from the 1950's. (I'm 99.9% certain this isn't Ultraflyte, Inc.)

Why it is not listed is a mystery to me. Perhaps a private owner has recently resurrected this field (new pavement & markings vs. old turf/gravel) and it's not yet been added to FAA records?
