In 1914, the U.S. Naval Academy purchased the 800-acre Hammond Manor Farm, situated in Gambrills, for the construction of a sanitary dairy. This farm remained in operation until 1998. At its closure it was the last operating dairy farm in Anne Arundel County. In 1997, the Dairy Farm was determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and is being operated today by Horizon Organic Dairy, Inc.
