On the 28th August 1976 a Lockheed C-141A Starlifter (67-0006) from the 438th MAW, US Air Force disintegrated in a severe thunderstorm on its approach to the USAF base at Mildenhall in Suffolk. The wreckage fell from the sky and covered a large area of farmland between the River Nene and a country lane called Thorney Dyke and all 14 crew and 4 passengers lost their lives.
