The Volkswagen Tourareg, especially the V10 diesel-powered version (not sold in CARB states), has been revered as one of the most capable off-roaders of its time. A mid-size luxury SUV introduced in 2002 to take on premium manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW, it was named for Northern Africa's Tuareg nomadic people. With V6s and V8s making much of what is offered in the U.S., it is no longer sold in that market as of 2017.
