It's an intermittent meandering river that happened to be dry at the time of the photo. The white color is not due to ice or whitewater rapids—rather, it's a large salt deposit.

I Richard Raya (tvcafe1 @ aol .com ) have studied the area for the past forty years . We go fishing near San Felipe a few times every year. The area of the white snake is made up of a thick sticky clay. it is usually wet because during high tides the area is covered by salt water. I believe some people a long time ago made levees in the shape of a snake. The sea water got trapped in this snake shaped canal for such a long time that a thick white salt bed formed. The people must have made this canal to trap fish and shrimp. The canal starts out in the north side over a mile wide and ends up on the south side only about ,100 feet wide.. This would make catching fish and shrimp much easier. The people must have left the area a long time ago because the levees are just about all gone now. The thick white snake shaped salt bed still remains, but not for long.
