The XL Center (previously known as the Hartford Civic Center) opened in 1975. It was the home of the NHL's Hartford Whalers until the team moved to North Carolina in 1997. Since that time, it has been home to the Hartford Wolf Pack AHL minor league hockey team. (note - the team was renamed the Connecticut Whale in 2010-12, as seen in this map).

In addition to ice hockey, the arena has hosted concerts and shows, UConn basketball, arena football, indoor soccer, minor league basketball, and occasional Boston Celtics games from 1975-1995.
