Today in History – September 3

1882 – The Hugstetten rail disaster occurred on the railway line between Freiburg im Breisgau and Breisach am Rhein with 64 people killed and some 230 seriously injured. It was the deadliest train accident in German history at the time.

1943 – The Allies invaded the Italian mainland, the invasion coinciding with an armistice made with the Italians who then re-entered the war on the Allied side.
