It contains several notable structures. Work on the current Castle Howard building began in 1701, and the Walled Garden was the first of its gardens to be created. It was first recorded in 1703, when the Gardener's House and a kitchen garden were constructed. It was built by the mason William Smith, and in 1705 the Satyr Gate was added, designed by Samuel Carpenter. The garden was enlarged in the 1740s, and then to the designs of Thomas Robinson in the late 1750s. This increased the area of the garden from 3 acres to more than 9 acres. Robinson also added heated walls, a conservatory, and a new entrance gate. In the early 20th century, a new conservatory was added, along with a boiler room and chimney, and 19 greenhouses. The garden design was simplified, and over the course of the century, much of the garden fell into disuse. In the 1970s, three rose garden areas were created by James Russell. A garden center was created at the west end of the garden in the 1990s, and much of the soil in the Sundial and Venus areas of the garden was replaced, allowing them to be planted with roses. In 2006, an ornamental vegetable garden area was added.
The Auckland Castle Deer House provided deer with shelter and food, and had grounds for picnics and rooms for enjoying the view.

Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace, is a former bishop's palace located in the town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England. The castle was a residence of the bishops of Durham from approximately 1183 and was their primary residence between 1832 and 2012, when the castle and its contents were sold to the Auckland Castle Trust. It is now a tourist attraction, but still houses the bishop's offices.

Mauterndorf Castle

By jdubble07

(2025-12-24)

Mauterndorf Castle is a castle in the municipality of Mauterndorf, in the Austrian state of Salzburg.

Mautendorf Castle was probably built on the site of an old Roman fort that dates to AD 326 or earlier. The fort had protected the Roman mountain road from Teurnia via Radstädter Tauern Pass to Iuvavum (present-day Salzburg) and served as a residence for the Roman administrator in the Noricum province. The original fort was destroyed during the Migration Period.

In 1894 the Mautendorf Castle was purchased by Hermann Epenstein (1851–1934), a Christian of Jewish descent, who served as a Prussian Army surgeon in Berlin. He refurbished and restored the decayed castle with great effort for use as a residence. In 1908 he obtained the minor title of a Ritter von Mauternburg from the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I for his meritorious services and donation to the Crown.

During his service in German South-West Africa in the late 1880s, Epenstein had become friends with Commissioner Heinrich Ernst Göring. Back in Germany, he offered the Göring family hospitality in his residences. He became the attending physician (and only slightly hidden lover) of Göring's wife Franziska, as well as the godfather and mentor of his children. The Göring family, among them the younger sons Hermann and Albert, frequently stayed at Mauterndorf Castle as Epenstein's guests.

The forty-room house featured the latest conveniences of the day, including gas lighting and running water. It is currently owned by the City of Hamilton, which purchased it in 1899 or 1900 for $50,000. The city has spent nearly $3 million renovating the site to make it open to the public. Commissioned in 1912, the street Apa’s castle was built in the Santa Efigênia neighborhood — at the time one of the most noble areas of the city. Designed to resemble a medieval castle, patriarch Dr. Virgílio Cézar dos Reis had the family manor built as a gift to his wife, Maria Cândida Guimarães dos Reis. The father died in 1937. Two months later, the children and their mother were found murdered on the floor of the castle. For the next 70-some years, the famous house sat abandoned, though it has now been mostly renovated.
Built in 1918, the residence served as a grand retreat and secondary family home for the influential Pereira Carneiro family, owners of the historic Estaleiro Mauá, one of Brazil’s oldest shipyards.
The mansion was named after Beatriz Pereira Carneiro, wife of industrialist Ernesto Pereira Carneiro. She was popularly referred to as the “condessa,” a reflection of the family’s influence and the social prestige they held in the era. Architecturally, the home blends Tudor, Norman, and medieval revival elements, giving it a romantic, almost castle-like appearance against the Niterói skyline. Rounded towers, textured stonework, and a monumental presence on the hillside make it a standout landmark.
Inside, the residence originally featured luxurious touches far ahead of its time, including a mechanical elevator, finely crafted finishes, and a seawater pool filled by pumps that carried water directly from the bay — an impressive engineering feat that showcased the family’s resources and creativity.
For many decades, the Palacete was an integral part of daily life for those connected to Estaleiro Mauá. As the shipyard declined in the late 1970s, the mansion fell into disuse and eventually deteriorated. Partial restoration efforts began in the late 1980s, and the building has since been considered for conversion into a museum dedicated to Brazil’s naval and industrial history.
Despite its cultural significance, the Palacete da Condessa has never been officially listed as a protected heritage site, leaving it vulnerable to decay. Even so, it continues to be recognized by locals and preservationists as an icon of Niterói’s architectural and industrial past, a powerful reminder of the city’s early modern ambitions and the legacy of one of its most influential families.
Today, the mansion remains a dramatic visual landmark overlooking Guanabara Bay, carrying with it a layered story of family legacy, architectural expression, and the rise and decline of one of Brazil’s most important shipbuilding empires.

It lies on a rock above the village of Nedvědice and the rivers Svratka and Nedvědička, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Brno. Pernštejn came to be known as the marble castle because of the marble-like stone used to frame the doors and windows.
It was founded by the Lords of Medlov probably between 1270 and 1285. Its history is closely connected to the Pernštejn family and their descendants. It has kept its intact appearance in the Gothic and Renaissance form as it was finished in the first half of the 16th century by the Pernštejns, then the richest and most powerful lordly family of the Bohemian kingdom.
