The Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is a National Historical Park of original and reconstructed nineteenth century buildings, located in the village of Appomattox Court House. The village is famous as the site of the Battle of Appomattox Court House and containing the house of Wilmer McLean, where the surrender of the Confederate Army under Robert E. Lee to Union commander Ulysses S. Grant took place on April 9, 1865, effectively ending the American Civil War.

It often confuses students new to this subject, because while there is a court house in this village, the name of the village itself is Appomattox Court House.

Battle Abbey

Battle Abbey is a partially ruined Benedictine abbey in Battle, East Sussex, England. The abbey was built on the site of the Battle of Hastings and dedicated to St Martin of Tours. It is a Scheduled Monument.

The Grade I listed site is now operated by English Heritage as 1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield, which includes the abbey buildings and ruins, a visitor centre with a film and exhibition about the battle, audio tours of the battlefield site, and the monks' gatehouse with recovered artefacts. The visitor centre includes a children's discovery room and a café, and there is an outdoor-themed playground.

Genkō monument (The Mongol Invasion of Japan)

On November 2nd,1274, the Mongolian army arrived off of Komoda beach on the southeast side of the island of Tsushima. With them, they brought 900 ships and 8,000 warriors. Taking Tsushima was the beginning of their planned invasion of the Japanese archipelago. Deputy governor (jitodai) Sō Sukekuni (statue) met the Mongols two days later with 80 mounted samurai and their vassals. All of the Japanese defenders were killed as the Mongolians pushed to control the island. This site honors the fallen samurai/Japanese.

The popular PlayStation game, Ghost of Tsushima, is based on the Mongol invasion of Tsushima.

Isandlwana Battlefield (Anglo-Zulu War)

The Battle of Isandlwana occurred on January 22, 1879, between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. It was the first major engagement of the Anglo-Zulu War. (Jan - July 1879)

It is noteworthy for its stunning scenery and the Zulu's decisive victory. The British were vastly outnumbered with a little over 1,800 men, while the Zulu's brought approximately 20,000 Impi. The Brits were unprepared and relied on their technological superiority while underestimating the size and speed of the Zulu mobilization.

Isandlwana is the isolated hill in the background.

There are cairns stacked all over the battlefield.

Ukrainian Border Guards outpost on Zmiinyi Island

This outpost was garrisoned by the Izmail Border Detachment of the Eastern Department of the Ukrainian Border Guards Service. It was from here that Roman Hrybov, a member of the garrison, replied to the Russian cruiser Moskva's appeal for them to surrender with the now famous phrase, "Russian warship, go f*ck yourself.

Majuba Hill Battlefield

Majuba Hill in the Drakensburg mountain range in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was on 27 February 1881 the site of the decisive battle of the First Anglo-Boer War (1880-81).

The battle culminated in a comprehensive victory for the Boer forces who defeated a British force of soldiers from the 58th Regiment and the 92nd Gordon Highlanders under the command of Major-General Sir George Pomery Colley.

The battle resulted in the British signing of a provisional peace treaty with the Boers and later the Pretoria Conventions, which gave the Boers self-rule in the Transvaal.

Qala Fort in Ghanzi, Afghanistan was the site of the Battle of Ghanzi during the First Anglo-Afghan War.

The Battle of Ghanzi took place on Tuesday 23rd July 1839. The British were victorious in the battle which is still viewed as pivotal in Afghanistan’s relationship with foreign powers and shaped the geopolitical dynamics of cental Asia for many years.

In the short term the battle secured Afghanistan for the British Empire and reduced the risk of British India being invaded by the Russian Empire through the Khyber and Bolan Passes.

Kaymakchalan (Kaimaktsalan) Battlefeild

The battlefield can be found on Profitis Ilias – Kaimaktsalan a mountain in modern day Greece.

The Battle of Kaymakchalan was fought during WWI between Serbian and Bulgarian forces on the Macedonian Front.

The battle raged between 12 and 30 September 1916. The result of the battle was that Serbian forces managed to capture the peak of Prophet Elijah.

Strategically the battle was not a huge Allied success as the upcoming winter prevented further military engagements.

Today there is a small Serbian built Orthodox Church dedicated to the Saint Peter on the summit of the mountain.

General Sickles's Wound Marker

During the Confederate assault on Gettysburg, General Daniel Sickles was wounded by a 12 lb cannonball in the right leg. He was sent behind the lines where the leg was amputated and returned to him. He eventually donated the amputated limb to the Army Medical Museum, later known as the National Museum of Health and Medicine, where it remains on display.

The Battle of Camp Hill (aka Battle of Birmingham) was a minor skirmish during the English Civil War.

The Battle took place on 3rd April 1643 (Easter Monday) when a small Parliamentarian force attempted to prevent a much larger Royalist detachment, led by Prince Rupert from passing through the town.

The Royalist drove the Parliamentarian out of the town and back towards Lichfield and brunt and pillaged the houses from which they had been attached.

The Battle of Viru Harbor was one of the battles of World War II between the Americans and the Japanese between June 30 and July 1, 1943, during the Solomon Islands campaign in the Pacific. With the support of air raids, the Marines surrounded the surrounding attack on Japanese defenders around the port and forced them to withdraw. The port was subsequently used by US forces to support further operations.

Kulikovo Field, (Russian Куликово поле) is the site of the battle in which in 1380 Dmitry Ivanovich Donskoy crushed the Tatars - the so-called Golden Horde. The field is located in the plain in the Tula region of Russia at the mouth of the Neyadwad to the Don. Today, there is a museum complex on Kulikovo pole with a 28-meter column on the Red Hill (Russian Красный Холм) built in 1848–1850 and a memorial church from 1913–1918, which now houses the Kulikovo Field Museum.

A prominent historical landmark from the Civil War Battle of Antietam. Prior to the battle it was an unremarkable small sunken road worn by mostly farmers.

On September 17, 1862 one of the largest conflicts of the American Civil War begun. In three hours of combat, 5,500 soldiers were killed or wounded and neither side gained a clear advantage. The Sunken Road was now Bloody Lane.

Old Iraqi Army Battle Positions on Iranian Border

The old Iraqi Army (Iran-Iraq war/Desert Storm era) would dig massive triangular shaped battle positions in the desert- basically a sand fort for their tanks. These would be arrayed in a gigantic saw-toothed formation that provided interlocking fields of fire between battalions and regiments. Each big triangle is a battalion, and each little triangle is a company (9 tanks).

I was trained to recognize them as an intelligence officer during Desert Shield/Storm. I noticed this on imagery was back in Iraq as an advisor to the Iraqi Army in 2008.

Battle of Phillips Corners - Toledo War

The Battle of Phillips Corners was a bloodless battle during the almost bloodless war in which the states of Michigan and Ohio fought over the territory known as the "Toledo territory". Between 1787 and 1805 both state's legislatures passed law claiming sovereignty of the 468-square-mile (1,210 km) strip of land. Tensions raised as both states raised militias as neither were willing to back down. There were no casualties in the war and the closest thing to violence occurred at Phillips Corner when the Michigan militia fired shots into the air to scare away the Ohio surveyors.

In 1836 Congress resolved the dispute by giving Michigan most of the upper peninsula of what is now Michigan if they relinquished their claim on the Toledo strip. The deal was struck and Michigan who initially felt swindled ended up reaping the benefits of the timber, copper and iron of the upper peninsula.

The Persian Gate was the name of an old pass through part of the Zagros Mountains. The pass connected Yasuj with Sedeh. In 331 BCE the gate was the site of the Battle of the Persian Gate in which the Achaemenid Empire (Persians) were defending against invasion from Alexander the Great.

The Persian lured the Macedonians into the narrowed pass and ambushed the advancing Macedonians, keeping the pass for a month. The battle was similar to Thermopylae in that the Persian were attempting to hold off a larger invading force in a narrow pass. The irony is Alexander was attacking the Persians for their invasion of Greece.

Eventually the Macedonians encircled the Persians through a pincer attack and were defeated. Some historians say this battle was the most serious challenge to Alexander's conquest of Persia.

The Guadalcanal American Memorial was dedicated in August 7, 1992 to all the Americans who lost their life during the Guadalcanal Campaign. Over 7,000 American soldiers died and almost 8,000 were wounded. The Guadalcanal Campaign was significant as it halted the Japanese expansion in the Pacific.

During the Revolutionary War, West Point, New York (Fort Clinton) held a strategic place on the Hudson River. The town sat on a S-curve in the Hudson and Fort Clinton was built in 1778 to fortify the curve. A great chain was place across the river to impede British vessels from travelling up the Hudson.

In 1780, America's must well-known traitor, Benedict Arnold attempted to hand the fort over to the British but the plot was foiled when British Major John Andre was captured as a spy.

In 1802 the United States Military Academy was established on the point.

Winters and company parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, fighting across France, the Nehterlands, Belgium and Germany. Winters features in numerous books and is played by Damian Lewis in HBO's "Band of Brothers".

The battle took place on 20 September 1792 as Prussian troops commanded by the Duke of Brunswick attempted to march on Paris. Generals François Kellermann and Charles Dumouriez stopped the advance near the northern village of Valmy in Champagne-Ardenne.
