The tower is said to be the oldest martello tower in the Caribbean and served as a prototype for future martello towers. At 56 ft (17 m) tall, this is the tallest building in Barbuda.

The tower was built during the Napoleonic Wars to protect Barbuda's southern coast and anchorage. Some documents say the fort was built on the site of a former Spanish fort built in 1745. Its design resembles Spanish towers of the same time period. However, archeological analysis of the structure's timber suggests that the fort may have originally been built by British admiral Charles Knowles in the 1740s.

Today, it serves as a remote waypoint for 4x4 trips along the coast. It’s far from any settlements, and getting there requires careful driving. There’s no water available, and the area is outside mobile phone coverage. Beautiful place to camp. However bring garbage with you!
A relatively recent site that’s easy to access—you can drive right up in a standard car. Just 200 meters from the fort, there’s a pleasant hotel, making it a convenient stop.

The structure itself is deteriorating quickly, as locals have been removing building materials over time. A renovation was reportedly planned a few years ago, but the local municipality ultimately rejected it.
I visited it two years ago and its worth the trip. Nice beach near by.

It lies off the foreshore at Cramond. It is 1⁄3 mile (0.54 km) long and covers 7.70 ha. The island is part of the Dalmeny Estate, owned by the Rosebery Estates Partnership. Cramond Island is a tidal island about 1.6 km out to sea, which is connected to the mainland at low tide across the Drum Sands. A paved path, exposed at low water, allows easy access. This causeway runs at the foot of a row of concrete pylons on one side of the causeway, which were constructed as an anti-boat boom during the Second World War and are one of the most striking sights in the area. There is evidence to suggest that the island may have had special significance to the prehistoric peoples who lived along the coast of the Firth of Forth, as at least one stone burial cist was found.

Why did someone put in so much effort to fortify a place in the middle of wild mountains where there is nothing far and wide? Why are fortifications in places that are of no strategic importance at all? And from the third question it freezes. In many places, there are signs of a catastrophe that no human hand could have caused. Who caused these scenes? It is thought that either it was a cult place or a fortress to protect the mined gold. It was not a residential fort, because there were no signs that people lived here permanently.
