The Holland Tunnel is a vehicular tunnel under the Hudson River that connects Hudson Square and Lower Manhattan in New York City in the east to Jersey City, New Jersey, in the west. The tunnel was designed by Clifford Milburn Holland, the project's chief engineer, who died in October 1924, before it was completed.

The Brooklyn Army Terminal is large complex of piers, docks, warehouses, cranes, rail sidings and cargo loading equipment on 95 acres (380,000 m2) between 58th and 63rd Street in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. During World War II, the terminal was responsible for shipment of 85% of army equipment and personnel overseas. The building was sold to New York City in 1981 and was then totally renovated. It is now leased and managed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation as a center for dozens of light manufacturing, warehousing and back-office businesses.

Also known as the U.S. Army Military Ocean Terminal, the Brooklyn Army Base, or the N.Y. Port of Embarkation, it was designed by Cass Gilbert and built in 1918. It was was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The listing includes 11 contributing buildings on an area of 97.2 acres (39.3 ha).

New York Water Taxi's Rockaway/Sandy Hook beach service is available at the Brooklyn Army Terminal to the Wall Street Ferry Pier, East 34th Street Pier, Sandy Hook Bay Marina, or Riis Landing on summer Fridays. New York Water Taxi used to serve the terminal during the rush hour and on summer weekends until those trips were indefinitely suspended due to lack of funding on July 2, 2010. Ferry service at this location became very important during the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and the 2005 New York City transit strike.

The Manhattan Beach Pier is located in Manhattan Beach, California on the Pacific coast. The pier is 928-feet long and located at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard. An octagonal Mediterranean-style building sits at the end of the pier and houses the Roundhouse Marine Studies Lab & Aquarium. The pier is popular with locals, tourists, and for fishing, as well as with photographers and artists, offering sunsets and vantage points from the shore and hillside.

A pier was built at this location in 1901. That pier was destroyed by a storm in 1913. In 1920, the pier with today's design was built. The pier has gone through numerous transformations over the years, but ultimately, the pier right now looks the way it did in 1920.

In 1995, the pier was declared a California historic landmark.

Clevedon Pier is a seaside pier in the town of Clevedon, on the English side of the Severn Estuary. It is situated next to the Royal Pier Hotel.

The landing stage at the end of the pier is occasionally used by ships, notably the Waverley and her sister ship, the Balmoral, and is a popular spot for angling. There is a cafe at the pierhead, and a souvenir shop at the toll house. The upper floor of the toll house is occasionally used for art exhibitions.

Three versions of the Pier were constructed by man and modified by nature. The first, 1,770 feet (540 m) long, was built of steel in 1898. At its end was the Pier Casino, a ballroom with room for 5,000 dancers. Shortly after its completion a storm reduced its length by 150 feet (46 m). It was rebuilt, but ten years later, after another storm, the pier was shortened to 700 feet (210 m) and the Casino was moved. In the interwar period, the Casino hosted such acts as Guy Lombardo, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Xavier Cugat, and Frank Sinatra. After the war Old Orchard became somewhat downscale, becoming known as a destination for blue-collar partygoers. A fire in 1969 destroyed Noah's Ark, the two carousels, and the Jack and Jill slide. The Casino was demolished in 1970, and a storm destroyed what was left of the pier in 1978. The current incarnation of the pier was built in 1980 and can be seen here

Margate had a Victorian pier which was destroyed by a violent storm in 1978.

Early pleasure piers were of wooden construction, with iron structures being introduced with the construction in 1855 of Margate Jetty, in Margate, England. Margate was wrecked in storms in 1978 and was never repaired.

Margate Jetty, also known as Margate Pier, which was designed by Eugenius Birch in 1856, has suffered damage from the sea over the years. On 1 January 1877 it was sliced through by a storm-driven wreck that marooned 40 to 50 people. They were not rescued until the next day. The pier survived until 11–12 January 1978, when it was hit by another storm. The storm washed up the planks from the pier onto Margate Beach. The wreck of the pier remained for several years, surviving several attempts to blow it up, before final demolition.

Margate Jetty is now categorised as a lost pier.

Queen's Pier, named after Queen Victoria, was a public ceremonial pier in front of City Hall in Edinburgh Place, Central, Hong Kong. Its two generations have served as a ceremonial pier as well as a public pier, and have witnessed the official arrival in Hong Kong of all of Hong Kong's governors since 1925; Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II landed there in 1975, Charles and Diana in 1989.

The pier, built along the newly reclaimed waterfront, was designed in a modern utilitarian style, and was opened by Maurine Grantham, wife of Governor Alexander Grantham in June 1954.

On 26 April 2007, the pier was officially closed by the government in order to facilitate land reclamation, soon after the adjacent Star Ferry pier was closed. There was fierce opposition by conservationists, who carried over their campaign to preserve the landmark. Police officers evicted some 30 protesters from the site on 1 August 2007; activists filed for a judicial review, and the High Court hearing began on 7 August. On 10 August, the court dismissed the request.

Finally, the Queen's Pier was completely demolished in February 2008. Its base piles were also removed in March 2008. In 2008, since dismantling, the government attempts to create the appearance of public support for reassembling the pier at the new waterfront has been criticised by conservationists.

Remains of the Merrion Promenade Pier and Baths

The Merrion Promenade Pier and Baths Co built Sandymount swimming baths in 1883. The baths measured approximately 40 by 40 meters, with a 75-meter pier added in 1884. The pier featured a bandstand half way along it and summer concerts were regularly held there for many years. By 1920, the pier had deteriorated so much that it had to be demolished. The concrete baths section, which resembles a small harbor, remains.

Birnbeck Pier is a pier in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England. It is situated on the Bristol Channel approximately 18 miles (28 km) south west of Bristol. Birnbeck is the only pier in the country which links the mainland to an island just off shore. The pier is currently closed to the public.

The grade II* listed pier was designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1867. The gothic toll house and pierhead buildings were designed by local architect Hans Price.

In 2006 the pier was sold to new owners, Manchester company Urban Splash. The people of Weston-super-Mare are waiting to see the company's plans for the future of the pier, the island and its buildings.[6] In 2007 the repair work required was estimated at £4 million.[7]

A competition was launched in August 2007 by new owners Urban Splash, inviting people to submit ideas for the regeneration of the pier and island.

In March 2008 the winners of the design competition were announced. There were 95 entries for the competition from around the world and from these, a shortlist of six was chosen with Levitate Architecture and Design Studio Ltd emerging as the eventual winners, who won £25,000 and will be paid a commission fee for their work. The winning design included a dozen luxury apartments and a 50-room hotel.

For half a century, anglers flocked to the Lake Worth pier for a rare, land-based opportunity to catch sailfish and other pelagic species, which the Gulf Stream current bring in. On every opening day of snook season, a line of anglers stood outside the chain link fence for hours before the pier opened. Cobia, African pompano and lots of pompano were routinely caught. And, a variety of snappers lurked near the pier pilings and nearshore reefs on the pier’s south side. The fish are still there, but the access isn’t. In 2004, Hurricane Frances destroyed the pier.

But after Frances destroyed the pier in 2004, Lake Worth Mayor Marc Drautz came to angling community’s rescue and fought to get federal funds to have the pier rebuilt. The new pier is currently under construction (off site), and will be assembled in May. As many as 400 people per day would fish from the pier on a weekend day, and local anglers can’t wait to wet a line from the new structure.

There is a most remarkable cathedral, St. Pierre, opposite the Town Hall, dating from the fifteenth century, which it is said suffered severely in a great gale in 1604, which blew down its spire and many of its statues. It has never been restored, and its huge doorways, its high exterior balconies, its narrow pierced windows, evidently for bowmen, all render it in appearance a vast mediæval fortress, which it undoubtedly was. Its interior is as remarkable, and contains many altars, statues, tombs, and in its nine chapels are great paintings, notably one by Dierick Bouts, "The Martyrdom of St. Erasmus."

This 150 feet tall ferris wheel was built in 1995. It is the second ferris wheel to operate at Navy Pier. The original measured 260 feet tall and carried 2000 passengers. It was built for Chicago's 1893 World Colombian Exposition and was removed in 1906. The current wheel has 40 six-passenger gondolas and operates year-round.

Walton-on-the Naze is situated on the East Coast of Britain close to the better known resort of Clacton. The original pier of 1830 can boast to being one of the earliest such structures in the country. This 300ft (91m) wooden jetty, used solely for the landing of goods and passengers, was to survive some sixty years before being severely damaged in a storm. Walton-on-the-Naze along with other East Anglian resorts had become a popular destination for passengers travelling on the 'Belle' steamers running between London to Great Yarmouth.

The Walton-on-the-Naze Hotel and Pier Company, who owned the now badly Walton-on-the-Naze Pier, rightly decided that a replacement should be built and a design by J Cochrane was accepted. The new 800ft (244m) Walton-on-the-Naze Pier opened in 1895. Successive extensions due to shoreline changes have increased the pier's overall length to 2,600ft (793m), making it the third longest pier in the country.

Along with other piers of considerable length it was important to move passengers and their luggage to the pier-head as comfortably and efficiently as technology would allow, especially in inclement weather. To this end a single-track electric tramway was installed along the pier deck. This tramway survived until 1935 when it was replaced by a rather unusual battery-powered carriage. Damaged in the fire of 1942 the battery carriage was eventually superseded by a diesel locomotive in 1948. Sadly, the railway service ceased operation in the 1970s. Along with other piers on the East Coast, storms in 1978-1979 were to cause considerable damage. At Walton-on-the-Naze massive waves battered the structure until eventually a 108ft (33m) section of the pier neck, collapsed into the sea.

Today, still owned by New Walton Pier Company who purchased it in 1937, Walton-on-the-Naze Pier plays host to a plethora of modern amusements and facilities that are all housed in an aircraft-hanger like building, at the shoreward end. Passing through the amusements the pier opens out into an uncluttered promenade, stretching as it did in its heyday towards the pier-head. Once here, Walton-on-the-Naze Pier becomes a favoured haunt of anglers. Walton-on-the-Naze Pier, like its neighbour at Clacton, may not be for the traditionalist, lacking the elegance and charm of a Victorian classic, but it still retains considerable entertainment appeal for the British tripper and, in the end, that is exactly what it was originally intended to do.

Cromer Pier & Pavillion Theater

There has been a Pier or jetty in Cromer since 1391. Letters granting the right to levy duties for repairs suggest that attempts at maintenance seem to have gone on until 1580. In 1582 Queen Elizabeth I granted the right to the inhabitants of Cromer to export wheat, barley and malt for the maintenance of their town and towards the rebuilding of the pier.

The last wooden jetty was built in 1846, described as a plain wooden structure it was just 70 yards long. By night, it was regulated by several bylaws, smoking was only allowed after the hour of nine o'clock when ladies would be expected to have retired for the evening. Gales damaged the jetty again so much so that it had to be dismantled and Cromer was left without a pier. This brief spell of emptiness spurred the 'pier commissioners' to consider a more fashionable structure, so it was in 1901 that the new pier opened.

At that time Cromer was served by two railway companies, The Great Eastern and the Midland and Great Northern. The great rivalry between the railway companies meant that any official occasion in the town gave them the excuse to bring dignitaries from far and near. So it was with the official opening of the pier.

The Great Eastern brought dignitaries and members of the press from London while the Midland and Great Northern ferried VIPs from as far a field as Birmingham and Bradford. The Blue Viennese Band played in the bandstand and the brochure assured visitors that 'Here, while the season lasts, strains of charming music will be constantly heard.' In 1905 the bandstand was covered to form an enclosed pavilion and the following season the first 'concert parties' performed. Throughout the 1920's and 30's the Cromer Protection Commission was responsible for selecting the concert parties at the pavilion, touring the South Coast looking at potential shows.


In 1936, one of the Pavilions most famous shows first appeared - Ronnie Brandon's 'Out the Blue'. At the outbreak of World War II the Royal Engineers removed the middle section of the pier and shows ceased for the duration of the hostilities. After the war Cromer Council advertised in the Stage for concert parties to provide shows to cover a fourteen week season. Devastating gales in 1953 demolished the Pavilion and wrecked the pier. The Government of the day granted compensation for the rebuilding of the Pavilion and the new 'Theatre' was ready in time for the 1955 season.


In 1978 the seating capacity was reduced to 440 and a new cafe, bar and foyer were built. At the same time a partnership with Richard Condon was formed. From this partnership 'Seaside Special' was created and as all regular visitors to Cromer and the Pavilion Theatre will know the show has gone from strength to strength winning the 'Pier of the Year' award in 2000.

In 2001 a new partnership was formed between North Norfolk District Council and Openwide International. This partnership has grown in strength with a major part of this focusing on ways to extend the season and increase economic growth for the Pier and Cromer.
In 2004 a further redevelopment has increased the seating capacity of the Pavilion to 510, added a restaurant called Tides, boasting the best views in town, a shop and a superb new theatre bar with extension.
Now the Pier, Pavilion Theatre, Tides Restaurant and Footprints looks forward with enthusiasm to other new and exciting chapters in this rich history… and looks back with proud and fond memories.

This seaport, built to accommodate transcontinental freight, opened in 1907. The quays which divide the inner and outer artificial harbors are wide enough to carry six great warehouses with electric cranes on both sides, and a number of railway tracks. The port also sports one of the largest drydocks in the world.

Worthing Pier

Worthing Pier is a pier in Worthing, West Sussex, England. Designed by Sir Robert Rawlinson, it was opened on July 4, 1861 and remains open, although it has been completely rebuilt in that time.

During a storm in March 1913 the pier was damaged in a storm, with only the southern end remaining, completely cut off from land. A rebuilt pier was opened on 29 May 1914.

In September 1933 the pier and all but the northern pavilion were destroyed by fire. In 1935 the remodelled Art Deco pier was opened, and it is this that remains today.

The pier is owned by Worthing Borough Council (formerly the Worthing Corporation).

The Pavilion Theatre and Denton Cafe is situated at the northern, land end of the pier; at the middle is the 1935 amusement arcade, which from 1956 - 2006 carried a distinctive 'New Amusements' sign that was featured on the cover of an album by Britpop band Gene (band). The Southern Pavilion (the sea end) is currently let to a nightclub operator, but is currently unused. It has previously been used as a cafe, dance hall and to house a model railway layout. Choptank River Bridge and Fishing Pier

The Choptank River Fishing Piers are open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The piers are lighted, and the pier is popular because of the variety of fish that can be caught including perch, striped bass, hard heads, sea trout, and catfish. The pier is lighted for night fishing and the Dorchester County side of the pier is open and lighted year round. The pier adjoins Sailwinds Park via the walkway under the bridge.

Fishing and crabbing are the main attractions but other activities such as bicycling, walking, jogging, picnicking or sunbathing can be enjoyed.

The Talbot County side offers 25 acres of land extending upriver from the pier and there is a walking path along the Choptank River and Bolingbroke Creek. While the area offers a variety of wildlife, the piers also are an excellent observation area for birds such as osprey and Canada geese.
