You hear it before you understand it — a strange acoustic intimacy in a space built for 10,000. Someone whispers at the orchestra level and you catch it clearly from the top row, 30 meters above. Myra's Roman theatre is not the best-preserved in Turkey, but it might be the most atmospherically powerful.

The ancient theatre of Myra is situated in modern-day Demre in Turkey’s Antalya Province. The remains of the theatre date primarily to the Roman Imperial period, having been constructed over a Hellenistic predecessor. Recent archaeological excavations around 2009 have uncovered significant evidence of the earlier Hellenistic structure beneath the Roman theatre. The Roman theatre was severely damaged by an earthquake in 141 CE and rebuilt in the first quarter of the 3rd century CE.

Later Roman modifications included converting the orchestra into an arena for gladiatorial games in the late 3rd century and adapting the space to be used as a water-filled arena for aquatic displays in the early 4th century. The most recent excavations during 2020-2021 have confirmed substantial remains of the earlier Hellenistic theatre.

Aphrodisias was a Hellenistic Greek city in the historic Caria region of western Asia Minor, today's Anatolia in Turkey. It is located about 100 km east from the coast of the Aegean Sea, and 230 km southeast of İzmir. The Council House or Bouleuterion was the centre of political power in the city. It was here that the boulē (city council) met, composed of the wealthiest citizens and dominated by a few of the most powerful families. The present Council House was an elaborate new roofed structure built in the later second century by the family of Tiberius Claudius Attalos, a Roman senator, and his brother Diogenes. Its rich marble interior marked the importance of the Council as an institution and the position of this family within it: their statues dominated both the interior and the exterior.

The Roman theatre of Thamugadi

The Roman theatre of Thamugadi (modern-day Timgad in Algeria) was cut into the side of a small hill south of the forum. It was designed to hold up to 4,000 spectators. A dedication dates the building to the reigns of Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus (161-169 CE). It was completed in 168 CE and was quarried by Justinian's soldiers when they built the nearby fortress in 539 CE.

Timgad was a Roman city in the Aurès Mountains of Algeria. It was founded by the Roman Emperor Trajan around 100 AD. The full name of the city was Colonia Marciana Ulpia Traiana Thamugadi. Emperor Trajan named the city in commemoration of his mother Marcia, eldest sister Ulpia Marciana, and father Marcus Ulpius Traianus.

The theater is the only well-preserved remnant of a Gallo-Roman settlement. It was discovered in the 1930s and confirmed by aerial photographs in 1955.
Since 1969, regular excavations of the site have uncovered new parts.

It is located on Long Island in the town of Farmingville, Brookhaven Township, County of Suffolk, NY. It has seating for 3,000 with a large lawn area for a total capacity of approximately 7,000. The principal signature of Millennium Plaza is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, a band shell designed by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry with 4,000 fixed seats plus additional lawn seating for 7,000. A Pritzker Architecture Prize honoree and National Medal of Arts winner, Gehry designed such landmarks as the Guggenheim Museum at Bilbao, Der Neue Zollhof in Düsseldorf and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. Characteristic of Gehry, the Pritzker Pavilion consists of massive panels of stainless steel resembling the graceful blooming of a flower or the unfurling sails of a massive ship.

The Pritzker Pavilion is the home of the Grant Park Music Festival, the nation's only remaining free, municipally-supported, outdoor, classical music series. The Festival is presented by the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. The Sferisterio of Macerata stands out as one of the most prominent architectural structures of the late European Neoclassical Style. In the first half of the Nineteenth century, a few wealthy gentlemen living in Macerata decided to enrich their city with a permanent structure used to host the game with ball and bangle and, at the same time, as an arena for the ’steccato’ and for bull fighting, which was very popular at the time of the Papal State.
Construction began on 2 October, 1820, according to the drawings provided by Salvatore Innocenzi. However, these were soon replaced by a project designed by Ireneo Aleandri, a young architect from San Severino Marche (MC).
The Sferisterio was inaugurated on 5 September, 1829. The very special shape of the building –which includes a playing field, a series of rooms for various purposes, a supporting wall, boxes and balconies– was carefully designed to encompass the needs of the sports activities which were popular in the first half of the Nineteenth century.
Walking inside, one may be struck by the surprisingly wide space the Sferisterio reveals: a huge arena (90 x 36 mt.) marked by two straight edges joined by means of a long, wide curve facing the huge background wall, which is 18 metres high and almost 90 metres wide. This high wall, nowadays so widely praised, was part of the requirements for the game with ball and bangle, whose rules foresaw a wall for the ball to bounce against. The wide stalls are placed on the grass and surrounded by a grand tier, below which were kept the animals to be used in the bull fighting.
A series of 56 Doric columns with Attic base stretch from both sides of the royal stage, supporting the boxes and ending in the stone terrace which beautifully crowns the whole structure. The building, which is in line with the best Neoclassical taste and betrays a Palladian influence, is not only magnificent per se, but it perfectly blends with the city landscape. The harmonious structure ensures perfect visibility and wonderful acoustics.

This large edifice dates from the 1st century BC and bears witness to the town’s importance during Roman times. The numerous excavations and restorations carried out from the late 1800s until now have brought to light inscriptions and excellent mosaics. The theater stands on the plain and is built from squared, rusticated blocks of limestone. Restored for the most part, the structure’s lower arcades and part of the upper arcades have been preserved. It is periodically used for classical drama performances.
Located at the northern limits of the ancient town, the building is built from squared, rusticated blocks of limestone. It originally had two tiers of arcades, of which the lower tier and some arches of the upper gallery remain standing. The ruins of walls in opus reticulatum are found in the corridors of the vomitories.
The cavea is divided into four wedges, and the strips without seats were probably filled by wooden stairs.
The floor of the orchestra, paved with limestone, channeled rainwater into a large cistern underneath the pulpitum. The frons scaenae has two rectangular side niches and a semicircular central niche. Pieces of the architectural decoration are kept in the Civic Museum (Palazzo dei Consoli). The museum also holds the remains of an Augustan inscription that refers to repairs done by the town’s magistrate, Cneus Satrius Rufus, who “…at his own expense did the roof of the basilicas, fastened the roof beams with iron, paved the floor with stone…”

Municipium Claudium Virunum, or simply, Virunum, was founded under Emperor Claudius as the capital of the province of Noricum succeeding the town upon the hilltop of Magdalensberg, perhaps also taking its name from that settlement, which is widely believed to have been the royal capital city of the pre-Roman Celtic kingdom of Noricum, a town whose name is, as yet, not known. The new Roman foundation was situated on the main route from the Adriatic to the Danube, with a branch through south eastern Carinthia connecting Virunum with the Amber Road. Established on a flood-proof terrace on the edge of Zollfeld parts of the city stretched as far as Töltschach Hill in the east.
