Hanover Tavern (1733)

The Hanover Tavern built in 1733 is one of the oldest taverns in the United States. Originally the Hanover acted as an inn, tavern and stable for travelers. Today, in addition to providing food and drink, the building now operates as a community center and theatre.

The tavern was supposedly visited by French officers Marquis de Lafayette, Marquis de Chastellux, and Rochambeau. Other guests included Chief Justice John Marshall, Edgar Allan Poe, P. T. Barnum, Charles Dickens, Union General Fitz John Porter, and Confederate generals J.E.B. Stuart and Wade Hampton.

Founding Father Patrick Henry met his first wife Sarah Shelton nearby, and George Washington refers to the tavern in his diary.

In 1971, the tavern was included in the Hanover County Courthouse Historic District.

Coal Miners Memorial Theater

The former Benham Theater opened in 1923. It has found new life as a live venue operating as the Coal Miners Memorial Theater. Not a lot of information on this, but the thing to understand is that for well over 200 years, coal mining was the industry in Kentucky. Most of America thinks of these people as backwards country hicks because haven't really "moved on" with the 20th and 21st Century. But these people are what's known as "Salt of the Earth", which is good people.

Located in the imposing Knights of Pythias Building, designed by African-American architect John C. Norman Sr. The Grand Theatre was opened in 1922 and closed around 1927. It was converted into a hospital, which closed in the early-1980’s. The building stands vacant in September 2019.

The Pythian Theatre was built in 1928 by an African American lodge of the Knights of Pythias at a cost of $55,000. The building held offices, a restaurant, and a billiard parlor as well as the lodge hall and movie theater. The theatre was renamed Fedo Theatre in the late-1940’s. It served Wheeling’s African American community into the mid-1950’s. As of 2026, it is vacant.

The State Theatre

The State Theater opened in 1942. The theater could seat 700. The State Theater remained in operation until 1980, and then sat vacant until 1993 when it was restored. It was reopened for movies in early-1994, including midnight showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”. Though the State Theater stopped showing movies again in 2003, it was still used for various live events. It had closed again by 2017, and remains vacant. A restoration plan has been hatched, as of 2026.

Madison Square Garden, known as "The Garden", is a multi-purpose indoor arena in New York City. It is located in Midtown Manhattan between Seventh and Eighth avenues from 31st to 33rd streets above Pennsylvania Station. It is the fourth venue to bear the name "Madison Square Garden"; the first two, opened in 1879 and 1890, were located on Madison Square, on East 26th Street and Madison Avenue, with the third Madison Square Garden farther uptown at Eighth Avenue and 50th Street, opened in 1925.

Leakey is a city in and the county seat of Real County, Texas. The population hovers around 300. The city is named for John H. Leakey (1824–1900), a pioneer from Tennessee.

The Glasshouse is an international center for musical education and concerts on the Gateshead bank of Quayside in northern England. Opened in 2004 as Sage Gateshead and occupied by North Music Trust, the venue's original name honors a patron: the accountancy software company The Sage Group. The Glasshouse contains three performance spaces; a 1,700-seater, a 450-seater, and a smaller rehearsal and performance hall, the Northern Rock Foundation Hall.

Gateshead is a town in the Gateshead Metropolitan Borough of Tyne and Wear, England.

The Mystic Theatre - Marmarth, North Dakota

The Mystic Theater is a rare example of a timber-framed movie theater. It is said the be the oldest movie theater in North Dakota. It opened on April 22, 1914 seating 187. The Mystic Theatre went through a complete renovation in 1999. The theater is now owned and operated by the Marmarth Historical Society. Though it was specifically designed for showing motion pictures, unfortunately, they no-longer show movies here. It was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places as of 1977.

Marmarth is the largest city in Slope County, in North Dakota with a population of around 100. The town is recognized for various historical events, including Native-American Lakota history, the discovery of the Dakota fossil and various other dinosaur skeletons, the attack on James L. Fisk by Sitting Bull, and several visits by former president Theodore Roosevelt.

The Tift Theater

Opened in 1937, the Tift Theater originally had seating for 1,400 and was designed in Art Moderne style, complete with a multicolored tile facade and neon-lit vertical sign and marquee. The interior of the Tift Theater had an unusual theme to its decor, the circus. The theater lasted exactly half a century before it went dark. Soon afterward, the community gathered behind the Tift Theater to save it, and it was restored and refurbished for use for various forms of live entertainment, as well as being available for special events.

The Pitman Theater

The Pitman Theater opened in 1947. In 1963, a ‘Hollywood’ type premiere of “To Kill A Mockingbird” was held for Mary Badham & Phillip Alford, child actors from this area (they returned 45 years later for an encore showing). The Pitman Theater closed in 1983, and was willed to the City of Gadsden after its owner passed away in 1986. It sat vacant and in a state of disrepair until efforts to restore it were begun in 1997. After a complete restoration, the theater has reopened as a community performing arts space.

Opened in February 1997, the Concert Hall (sometimes known as the ‘Big Hall’) is located in the Katuaq Culture House which was designed by Danish architects Schmidt, Hammer & Lassen. The building has a unique shape which was inspired by the ‘Northern Lights’. It was designed as a multi purpose hall for films, drama, concerts and live performances and serves the capital city of Nuuk well in these forms of entertainment.

The King’s Theater

Built and opened as a live theater, the King’s Theater opened on 1st October 1904. It was designed in an Edwardian Baroque style by Glasgow architect Alexander Cullen. There is a finely detailed facade containing pilasters and columns in red sandstone. Inside the auditorium, the seating capacity was provided for 1,268. In 1913, Bioscope shows, an early film projector or camera, began to be shown. During the 1970's, it was "twinned", and closed for good in 1999. On 1st August 2002, Historic Scotland designated the former ABC a Grade B Listed building.

There were six opera boxes on each side of the proscenium, which were removed when the theater was equipped for CinemaScope in 1954. The Lyric Theater was closed as a regular movie theater in March 1960. It reopened on April 19, 1973 as the Grand Bijou Theater. It went over to adult movies first as the Foxy Adult Cinema, and later as the Roxy Adult Cinema which closed in the early-1980’s. The building lay empty and unused and in 1993, the owners sold it for $10 to Birmingham Landmarks. In 1998 plans were being formed to reopen the Lyric Theater, but very little happened and the building began to deteriorate. In March 2014, plans were approved for an $8 million renovation to be carried out. The opera boxes have been re-instated, and the mural restored by Evergreene Architectural Arts, who worked on most of the internal restoration. The Lyric Theater re-opened in 2016 as a live music and concert venue. Seating has been reduced to 750 as the upper balcony is not in use.

Huntington Bank Pavilion - Former Meigs Field

Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island is an outdoor amphitheater located on the human-made peninsula Northerly Island, in Chicago, Illinois. The venue is a temporary structure, with the summer concert season running from May or June until September or October. The amphitheater opened in June 2005.

The venue lies on the former site of Meigs Field. On March 30, 2003, Mayor Richard M. Daley ordered a midnight demolition of the airfield. The construction crew excavated six large X's on the runway. Daley stated the continued operation of the airfield was a threat to Chicago's cityscape, using the events of 9/11 as a reference. The airfield was set to continue operation until 2011, when it would be turned over to the City of Chicago. No one within state or city government were consulted on the demolition besides Daley. The Federal Aviation Administration fined the city $33,000, with an additional one million paid in grants.

Two original 8 x 30 feet hand painted murals adorn the interior walls of the theater, complimenting the building’s Art Deco style with terrazzo floors, walnut paneling and floor to ceiling foyer mirrors. Today, the Madison Theater offers a variety of live music, comedy, sports and film events. After a three million dollar restoration and renovation the theater re-opened in 2001 on New Year’s Eve. It boasts state of the art sound and lighting and has two fully retractable screens.

The enormous Victory Theater opened in 1920 and was one of eight theaters that thrived during the days of vaudeville and silent motion pictures. The Victory Theater switched to an all-movies format in 1931. It remained a vibrant movie house until it closed in 1979. The old theater’s blade sign was removed in 1986 and the marquee was torn down in 1991.

Located a block off of Hollywood Boulevard, the Bijou Adult Theater was one of the numerous storefront adult cinemas that popped up in Hollywood during the 1970’s. Period photos depict a relatively small corner unit, with a surprisingly formal cinema marquee; reminiscent of the marquees seen on “classic” mainstream theaters. Programming was billed as “All color hits all nite”, triple features running continuously for a $3 admission price. As the Internet and home video killed off adult movie houses in droves, the business continued operated as the Cahuenga Video Adult Book Store until it was closed in spring of 2019.

Teatro Tablado is a historic and deeply influential theater school in Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1951 by the celebrated playwright Maria Clara Machado. Over the decades, it has become not just a performance space but a true training ground — or “cradle” — for generations of Brazilian actors.
The school’s approach to acting is rooted in improvisation, and its classes are uniquely structured: students work directly on stage, learning through exercises inspired by the French tradition and guided by Machado’s own vision. Because of this hands-on methodology, Tablado has produced more than five thousand professionals in the arts — actors, directors, playwrights, and more.
Some of Brazil’s most recognizable actors began at Tablado. Fernanda Torres joined at just 13 years old and later became a major name in film and television. Louise Cardoso also trained there, both as a student and later as a teacher, helping to shape future generations. Other alumni include Malu Mader, Cláudia Abreu, Andréa Beltrão, Mateus Solano, Gregório Duvivier, and Enrique Diaz, among many others.
Over time, Tablado has earned formal recognition for its cultural importance: it was declared a Cultural and Intangible Heritage of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Its legacy isn’t just in its performances, but in the way it has shaped Brazilian performing arts. The school continues to operate to this day, offering courses in improvisation, character building, and theatrical development — always maintaining the spirit of Maria Clara Machado’s original mission.

Located in the Garland Building and opened as the Morosco Theater by Los Angeles based producer Oliver Morosco in 1913. The theater was conceived not as a vaudeville house or nickelodeon, but as a elegant dramatic play house, which, among other special touches, included special rows of seats that accommodated portly patrons who weighed more than 200 pounds. It was equipped for motion pictures in 1930. By 1938, it became the first continuous newsreel theater in Los Angeles, having been renamed Newsreel Theater. The Globe Theater continued for many years as a 3rd-run house showing double-bill programs at bargain prices. In 1958, a Mexican wax museum opened in the basement to supplement the Spanish-language programming which had begun to be screened upstairs. The Globe Theater was still screening Spanish language films when it closed in 1986. In 1987, concrete was used to level the floor from the lobby to the stage, so that a permanent indoor swap meet could supplant what had once been the first serious playhouse in Los Angeles. The swap meet occupied the building for many years. Currently, it is a nightclub space.

The Loews State Theater was opened in 1921 to both vaudeville and film. It was equipped with a Moeller 3 Manual/18 Ranks theater organ. The theater had two entrances, one on S. Broadway, the other on W. 8th Street and the theater is surrounded by a 12 story office building - the largest brick-clad building in Los Angeles. Inside the auditorium the decorative style combines Classical, Medieval and traditional Spanish styles. Three outstanding features are a lavish ceiling decorated in a Spanish Rococo style, a seated Buddha occupying a niche above the proscenium arch and the splendid futuristic painting on the asbestos safety curtain which depicts a composition of orange and gold planets and comets floating around onion-domed towers on a brilliant blue background. During the 1990’s the State Theater was used for location shoots, where Bette Midler’s version of “Gypsy” had a scene filmed here. The New Telocvičná Slovenská Jednota Sokol Hall was opened by the Tel. Jed. Sokol to serve the area Czech population. The Hall became known by the Parish Theater as motion pictures were shown as the Depression began. But the Parish The combination of a declining population, challenging economic times, and the demise of the big band / dance hall era and rise of television led to many fewer events for the Sokol Hall. The Hall managed to make to its 94th year of operation before the town whose population had sunk to just 69 residents in 2017 finally closed the Hall, it is still closed to this day (2025). In the front entryway, you can see a ticket booth.

This is not to be confused with the Telocvicna Jednota Sokol Hall, also in Nebraska, but not in Abie.

The Gaumont State Theater

Gaumont State Theater was opened by Gaumont Super Cinemas on 20th December 1937. The theater was the largest movie palace ever built in England and the third largest in the United Kingdom. The theater’s 4,004 seating capacity was split between a massive 1,356 seat balcony and an orchestra level which seated 2,648. Although it was large, beautiful, and meticulously designed, internally it was considered ‘old fashioned’, as earlier theaters by the same chain were more directly influenced by the popularity of an Art Deco style. The main auditorium cinema closed on 18th September 1980 and the second screen closed in 1981. Bingo continued in a sectioned off rear seating section. In 2008, the building was purchased by a church, but remained shuttered, awaiting planning permission for a change of use. It was re-opened as the Ruach Ministries Church in 2010. The Wurlitzer organ has not been played publicly for several years, but it receives occasional maintenance. In 2025 the first concert in the building since 1978 was held. It featured the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing light music, film themes & popular songs from the 1940-1960’s to an audience of over 2,000.

The Uptown Theater opened on January 6, 1928. In the late-1930’s, the Uptown Theater copyrighted a Fragratone system, which funneled fragrances into the auditorium via the ventilation ducts. In the 1970’s, both the Lyric Opera and the Palace Dinner Theatre used the Uptown Theater as their home in addition to hosting concerts and live performances on its stage. In 1989, the Uptown Theater at last closed its doors and soon fell into a state of disrepair. In 1994, the theater and began a year-long, $15 million restoration project which returned the theater back to its former glory. Today, the Uptown Theater is one of the Midwest’s finest restored historic movie palaces. It plays host to concerts and special events, such as weddings, corporate events and other occasions.

The Mir Theater is a theater and concert hall in the center of Moscow. The original Mir was built in 1881, however in 1957, architects Butuzov, Stregalayva & Bogdanov designed a new cinema named Mir Theater on the site. In its heyday in the 1970’s queues formed to purchase tickets for performances which began at 6am. Between 1992 and 1995 French and American productions were screened. The large foyer was gradually taken over by numerous sales kiosks and from 1995 a section of it became a bingo hall. It is no longer used as a cinema.

The Empire

Opened on 1st July 1911, the Empire Theatre was designed by architect Arthur S. Hewitt as a purpose-built cinema and the exterior was clad in a vitreous terra-cotta material in a ‘free Renaissance’ style. Operated as a cinema until the late-1960’s when it switched to bingo. Continued to screen late night shows after the evening bingo session finished and morning cartoon shows between 10am and 1pm during the summer season May to September. Had a short period during the late-1980’s early-1990’s as a full-time cinema again when the ABC Regent closed to become bingo club. Most recently a live music venue, the Empire has been owned by the Jay family for the last 70 years.

Imperial Theater

This theater was a neighborhood theater in the Mohawk section of Cincinnati on McMicken Avenue. Originally a vaudeville house in 1912, with 800 seats, it converted to movies pictures in the late 1930s. In the mid-1960’s, they started showing adult movies - back then they were rated X, but now those movies would be a “soft R”. Later in the 1960’s, they had live burlesque shows and renamed it Imperial Follies. Since the early 2000's, various retail business have occupied this space, however there is a move to redevelop it as a Performing Arts and Education Center.

Albemarle Theater

Opened as the Albemarle Theater on March 17, 1921 presenting vaudeville and Fox pictures. Initially it was not a success. It was still an excellent place to see event films in the 1970’s like “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and played host to most of the horror movies of the early-1980’s like “Creepshow”. In late-1984, at a time when there were few single screen cinemas left in Brooklyn, the Albemarle Theater closed its doors due to a fire. It was able to be refurbished after laying dormant for a few months when it was purchased by the Jehovah’s Witnesses and became a Kingdom Hall.

The Palace-Hippodrome Theater

The Palace-Hippodrome Theater opened on 23rd September 1907 and was part of the MacNaghten Vaudeville Circuit. Closed in 1957 when the MacNaghten Vaudeville Circuit ceased operation, it remained closed for 3 years. It was purchased by the Hutchinson circuit in 1960 and re-opened as a film theater. The Palace Cinema closed on 7th November 1964. It then became a Surewin bingo hall, operated by Hutchinson’s. In later years it was known as the Apollo Bingo Club until it closed in 1997. After a few years of laying empty, it is became a nightclub named Brannigans. By 2013, it was known as the Showbar. It was closed in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was announced in March 2021 that the closure would be permanent.

The Lyric - Ritz Theater

The Lyric Theater was opened April 7, 1918. It was renamed Ritz Theater on October 21, 1928. Initially had both vaudeville and films, I have no idea when it permanently closed as a theater.

The building was constructed for the Anniston Theater Company in 1918 and sold to the Anniston Amusement Company the following year. From its opening until 1928, the building hosted the Keith Vaudeville circuit of New York and a summer Chautauqua circuit. It was the main source of entertainment for the men at Camp McClellan, who were training there for World War I. In either 1927 or 1928, the building was leased by Publix Theaters, a major theater chain and adapted for motion pictures

Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum Theater opened on October 2, 1913 as a vaudeville house and originally had a seating capacity of 900. By 1933 it was operated by Paramount Pictures. This elegant and beautifully-preserved theater served in this capacity until 1954, when the Community Playhouse group acquired the Orpheum Theater for its home.

The Virginia Theater

The building was built in 1897 as the Opera House. It was the first Opera House in town and became a silent movie theater in 1914, having been renamed Orpheum Theater. On January 6, 1922 it was renamed Frolic Theater. A Grand Opening happened June 2, 1929 after alterations had been carried out it was renamed Alhambra Theater. The film that night was the talkie “Lilac Time” starring Gary Cooper. The Alhambra Theater had other uses after the Niles Theater opened in 1937, including the Elks Lodge and Roller Rink.

The Gem Theater

The Gem Theater opened its doors on October 10, 1910, and seated 685. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1929. A new Gem Theater was built in the shell of the original theater. A fire which started in the dressing rooms in 1934 completely gutted the theater. After being rebuilt a second time, the Gem Theater continued to operate for nearly another half century, before it was closed in 1978. Plans to get the theater reopened over the years have all stalled. The theater today sits vacant, having fallen into serious disrepair.

The Théâtre des Célestins is a theatre building on the Place des Célestins in Lyon, France. It was designed by Gaspard André, and inaugurated in 1877, then again in 2005. Alongside the Comédie-Française and the Théâtre de l'Odéon, it is one of few theatres with over 200 years' continual usage in France. It is now a municipal theatre directly run by the City of Lyon. It has a contemporary and classical repertoire as well as producing new work. The theatre and the square on which it stands are named after a convent and church of the Celestine order, which occupied the site between 1407 and 1789.

The Landers Theater

The Gem Opera House opened in 1906 in a three-story structure located on Main Street. By the early-1920’s, the Gem had become a movie house, with only occasional stage shows. It became the first movie theater in the area to screen sound films. It was in late-1930 that it was renamed the Landers Theater. Will Rogers appeared on the stage of the theater. Operated by the Landers family which would operate the theater for three generations, until it closed on November 21, 1996 with Goldie Hawn in “The First Wives Club”. After it closed as a movie house, it was used infrequently for concerts until finally closing in 2001. Now the auditorium functions as a venue for a church.

Vallenata Music Events Center

It's a shame there are no current Street View images of this structure, it's quite amazing. The Center is dedicated to folklore and vallenata music, a music style recently designated by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Colombia and that takes its name from the capital of the Department of Cesar, Valledupar. Like a great tree, the building is designed elevated, generating under it a sheltered space, protected from the sun and the rain, for the use of parrandas (a traditional carnival-like street fair or block party), flea markets and other popular events complementary to the ones inside the building. The elevated floors house the main areas of the building - a great Hall with the reception of the center, the Vallenato Museum and a large and versatile assembly hall with capacity for up to 1,200 people.

Famed actor, Mickey Rooney, performed at the nearby Edgewood Auditorium in April 2001 in a benefit performance for the theater.

Neptune Theatre

The Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum has a Beaux Arts facade designed by movie theater architect G. Albert Lansburgh and has a Mighty Wurlitzer organ, installed in 1928, that is one of three pipe organs remaining in Southern California.

Not much is known about the El Piñon Theater in Abiquiu, NM. The small northern New Mexico village is best known for its most famous resident, iconic American artist Georgia O'Keeffe. The village's churches, Santo Tomas El Apostol Church, Penitente Morada, and on the edge of town the ruins of Santa Rosa de Lima. The neon tubes on the simple El Pinon sign remain. The theater sits on the Church Plaza at the center of town.

The building began as a vaudeville hall that hosted a diverse range of live entertainment, including acrobats, comedians, lecturers, and magicians. The current owners have announced plans to renovate the building and reopen it as a multi-purpose theater for films, concerts, and theatrical performances.

The Historic Fox Theater

Built in 1929 by Keith Neville, a former governor of Nebraska. It was opened that same year with George O'Brien in “Salute”. The Fox Theater was closed on September 9, 1980 with the Avis Davis Band in “No Nukes” & Gary Busey in “The Buddy Holly Story”. It was donated to the North Platte Community Playhouse in 1980 by Neville’s four daughters, and renovated through public donations and volunteer labor. The Fox sign and marquee remain. As the Neville Center for the Performing Arts it is used for Playhouse stage productions, lectures, concerts and special events.

Asbury Park Theater and Convention Center

The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States, is co-located with the Asbury Park Convention Hall on the boardwalk along the Atlantic Ocean. In 1927, a mysterious fire destroyed an existing arcade, and a bond referendum was passed to construct a new convention center on the plot. A 1600-seat theater and 3200-seat convention center was built.

This is a performing art studio in Hong Kong. Located in Tsim Sha Tsui, the venue is part of the West Kowloon Cultural District and the 1st building completed in the district plan. The construction began on 9/24/2013, and completed in 2018, costing 2.7 billion HK dollars. The Centre opened to the public on 1/20/2019.

Featured in a Fork in the Road challenge in Leg 1 of The Amazing Race 37.

Teams had to dress up in traditional costume and makeup and perform a section of a Cantonese opera, fully in Cantonese, before receiving their next clue.

The Needles Theater was built in 1929 by the Masonic Order at an estimated cost of $120,000. The order occupied the second floor and leased the theater space on the main level. Two shops were initially housed on the first level, as well, including a real estate business and a Sweet Shoppe. The theater, which seated 700 people, opened on March 1, 1930. The theater, very modern for the times, included a water based heating and cooling system, a good sized cinema screen, a full stage, and orchestra pit. Though privately owned today, restoration efforts continue.

During the Battle of Mariupol, Ukrainian civilians, including many children, sheltered in the Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theater. In order to keep the building from being attacked, the word "дети," meaning "children" in Russian was painted in large letters outside the theater. The building was subsequently hit by a Russian missile strike, killing hundreds. Another example of Russian state-sponsored terrorism. The intact building can be seen in Google Earth's 3/2022 imagery, while the aftermath and ruins can be seen in the 5/2022 imagery.

Yakov Smirnoff is a Ukrainian-American comedian, actor and writer. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in the Soviet Union, then immigrated to the United States in 1977 in order to pursue an American show business career, not yet knowing any English.

Since 1993, he has been performing at his own 2,000-seat theater, called 'Yakov's Theater', and over the years has entertained more than five million people in a live setting. His 28th consecutive season was commemorated in Branson, Missouri in 2021. In the late 1990s he retooled his stand-up act to focus on the differences between men and women, and on solving problems within relationships.
