Bir Hima (بئر حما) is a rock art site in Najran province, SW Saudi Arabia, about 120 km N of the city of Najran. An ancient site of Prehistoric Arabia, it was settled during the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods, with the Bir Hima Complex covering the time period of 7000–1000 BCE. Bir Hima contains numerous troughs whose type is similar from North Arabia to Yemen.

It was designated as part of the Hima Cultural Area UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021.

These are pre-historic engravings on flat vertical rock faces on the riverside of the Daegokcheon stream, a branch of the Taehwa River, which runs E and joins the East Sea at Ulsan. They are National Treasure of South Korea # 285 and were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025.

This site presents a vivid & intricate portrayal of whaling, unmatched by any rock art found globally. The carvings, featuring animals, human figures, hunting scenes, concentric circles, diamond patterns, & inscriptions, exhibit remarkable realism and energy, arranged in a distinctive blend of figurative imagery & written symbols. This is a national park on the Burrup Peninsula in the Pilbara region in the NW of Western Australia, covering an area of 48.51 km2.

It was officially declared on 1/17/2013 as the hundredth national park in Western Australia. The park protects what's considered the world’s highest concentration of ancient petroglyphs, with over 10,000 rock engravings created by the region's Aboriginal peoples.

In 07/2025, UNESCO listed the rock art gallery, an area covering nearly 250,000 ac, known as the Murujuga Cultural Landscape, as a World Heritage Site.

Pictographs - Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site

The pictographs on the stone walls of Seminole Canyon provide clues to the lives of the early residents of the area.

Seminole Canyon State Park and Historic Site is owned and operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. Within the 2,172.5 acres there are over 200 pictograph sites. These sites are very diverse and range from a single painting in a cave to large panels with numerous figures and motifs.

There is evidence that early man first came to the Seminole Canyon area around 12,000 ago when the climate was more moderate than today, and many long extinct animals roamed the plains.

As the climate change the people of the area became hunter-gatherers and lived in small groups. However, despite the harsh environment these people still felt it was important to paint.

The pictographs in Seminole Canyon are in a style which is only found in the parts of the Rio Grande and the Pecos and Devils River valleys.

Newspaper Rock Petroglyph Site

Newspaper Rock, a State Historical Monument, is part of the Wingate sandstone cliffs at the upper end of Indian Creek Canyon falls within the Bears Ears National Monument.

There are in excess of 650 designs on the rock making It is one of the largest collections of petroglyphs in the country. These designs include animals, human figures and religious symbols.

The petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock have been chiselled into desert varnish. This is a black manganese-iron deposit that gradually forms on exposed sandstone cliff faces due to exposure to rainfall and bacteria. The weathering process means that some of the older figures are themselves becoming darker in colour as new varnish slowly develops.

The earliest carvings at Newspaper Rock were made around 2,000 years ago with the latest being created by the first modern day explorers of the region in the early 20th century.

The petroglyphs mainly fall into three groups: Anasazi (AD 1 to 1300), Fremont (AD 700 to 1300) and Navajo (AD 1500 onwards).

Rinconada Canyon Trail

The Rinconada Canyon trail follows a volcanic escarpment where many petroglyphs were chiselled into the boulders by the ancestral Pueblo People.

The geology of the canyon was shaped by volcanic activity 200,000 years ago. During the volcanic eruptions a layer of basalt was deposited over the pre-existing sandstone of the Santa Fe Formation. Over time differential weathering of the soft sandstone and the harder basalt has caused large blocks of basalt to break off and roll down the escarpment.

The moderately strenuous trail is 1.1 miles long, a round trip of 2.2 miles and affords the visitor the opportunity to view a variety of petroglyphs, wildlife and shelters.

Legend Rock Petroglyph Site is a Wyoming State Park where approximately 300 petroglyphs on 92 different panel are chiselled into the vertical cliffs.

The site has great spiritual significance to Native Americans tribes including the Crow, Arapahoe, Sioux, Kiowa, Blackfoot and Cheyenne.

The earliest petroglyphs date aback six Milenia and are in the style of ancestor group of the Shoshone. The designs incorporate humans, animals and geometric patterns, with many of the human figures sporting headdresses and decorated torsos.

In late November 2020, a mysterious metal 'obelisk' was discovered in a remote part of the southern Utah desert by ranchers observing big horn sheep from a helicopter. The 12 foot tall, shiny metal pillar bears a striking similarity to one of the alien monoliths from the 1968 Stanley Kubrick film '2001: A Space Odyssey'.

Internet sleuths, however, were able to locate the object from satellite imagery and determine it was erected sometime between August 2015 and October 2016.
