Saginaw Harness Raceway

On the former site of the Saginaw County Fairgrounds is what remains of the Saginaw Harness Raceway, which was previously known as Saginaw Valley Downs. The harness horse track opened here in 1980 and closed after the 2005 season.

The fairgrounds were once located outside of the city, but Saginaw eventually grew to surround the fairgrounds. In 2002, the fair was moved to Chesaning. In 2009, most of the remaining structures on the grounds were demolished. The grandstands for the race track remain standing.

Jackson Speedway

This 1/2 mile dirt oval race track is located at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in southern Minnesota. Auto racing on this circuit dates back to 1934. Weekly races were first held in the mid-1950's. Sprint cars, stock cars, and modifieds compete here on a regular basis. Tractor pulls and concerts are occasionally held here.

A small 1/8 mile oval track is also located within the fairgrounds for micro sprint racing.

Tractor pull at the Iowa State Fair

Tractor pulling involves the competition of modified farm tractors. Competitors pull a heavy sled down a course measuring at least 320 feet (distances vary by location). As the sled is pulled forward, the weight slides forward, making it harder and harder to pull.

Those who can pull the sled the full distance advance to the next round, with the weight of the sled increased. A winner is declared when less than two tractors complete the full distance. These events are common at state and county fairs in agricultural areas of the United States.

Auto racing has been held at the Howard County Fairgrounds since 1936. Cars raced on a 1/2 mile dirt oval track until this smaller 3/8 mile track was built in 1964.

The track has held weekly events in the past, but in 2014, it is only scheduled to host eight nights of auto racing, a motocross event, and a tractor pull event during the county fair.

Auto races were held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds from 1902-2002. The final race on September 2, 2002 was held 25 days before the 100th anniversary of the fairgrounds first race.

Cars originally raced on a one mile dirt oval horse racing track until 1939. In 1940, a smaller half mile dirt oval track was created. The track was paved in 1964. A portion of the racing surface was removed in 2003 proving that auto racing at the fairgrounds is a thing of the past.

The fairgrounds hosted the legendary Monterey Pop Festival between June 16 to June 18, 1967. Monterey was the first widely promoted and heavily attended rock festival, attracting an estimated 55,000 total attendees with up to 90,000 people present at the event's peak at midnight on Sunday. The festival was planned in seven weeks by promoter Lou Adler, John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, producer Alan Pariser, and publicist Derek Taylor. Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin (in one of her earliest major public performances), The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, Ravi Shankar, Simon & Garfunkel and The Byrds were all on the bill. The Mamas & the Papas closed the festival. The fairgrounds also host the annual Monterey Jazz Festival.

Hjallerup Horse Fair is an annual fair dating back to the year 1744 when the holder of the local inn arranged a fair south of the place today. The holders of the inn was responsible for the fair over the years until 1965. Since 1966 the people of Hjallerup took over and arranged the fairs.

It's the biggest fair in Denmark and also most popular with over 200,000 visitors and more than 1,000 horses each year. Other animals are also presented, including a childrens fair showing their pets and farming animals.

The city of Burlington, Wisconsin, is nicknamed "Chocolate City, USA" because of the Nestlé chocolate factory located here. A celebration in 1986 for the factory's 20th anniversary became an annual event and has evolved into the current four-day festival loaded with fun for the whole family.

Leighton Hall is an historic house 0.5 miles (1 km) to the west of Yealand Conyers, Lancashire, England. It is a Grade II* listed building.

It was the seat of the 1642-1673 Middleton Baronetcy of George Middleton. The present house was built in 1759–61 in Georgian style to a design by John Hird. The façade was Gothicized in 1822–25 using local white limestone. In 1870 Paley and Austin replaced the west side of the building, and added a tower and a wing.

RAF Station Winthorpe, No. 51 Base, was opened as a satellite station for RAF Swinderby. Early operations were mainly centred on the Polish squadrons 300 and 301, who usually flew Fairey Battles, operating from Winthorpe when Swinderby was water logged.

9/40 to 02/42, Satellite to Swinderby (then Syerston) with 300 and 301 Polish Sqns with Battles and Wellingtons, then 455 Sqn Hampdens.
1942, Closed for most of the year when it was rebuilt with concrete runways. After construction it was found that the main runway take-off was over a vital roller bearing factory!
10/42 to 08/45, Again Satellite for Swinderby with 1661 HCU with Manchesters and Lancasters, later Halifaxes and Stirlings, finally Lancasters.
08/45 to 07/47, Transferred to Transport Command and used as a Drop Zone. Then used by 1331 Heavy Transport Conversion Unit with Halifaxes.
Transferred to Maintenance Command until closure.

"World's Largest Music Festival" is celebrating it's 40th anniversary in 2007.

Shown in this view is the north entrance to this lakefront festival grounds. For 11 days every summer, musical acts big and small entertain hundreds of thousands of people on 13 stages. Along with the music, there is great food, amusement rides, vendors, fireworks, waterski shows, and of course - beer.

Other ethnic festivals (Irish, German, African, Mexican, Polish, Italian, and more) are held on these grounds throughout the summer.

Navy Pier Ferris Wheel

This 150 feet tall ferris wheel was built in 1995. It is the second ferris wheel to operate at Navy Pier. The original measured 260 feet tall and carried 2000 passengers. It was built for Chicago's 1893 World Colombian Exposition and was removed in 1906. The current wheel has 40 six-passenger gondolas and operates year-round.

The Spanish City was a permanent seaside fairground in Whitley Bay, a seaside town in the North East of England. It was demolished for redevelopment (including a new school) in the late 1990s. The centrepiece of the Spanish City was the Dome, which still exists, although most of the fairground site has gone.

The Spanish City was opened in 1910. It earned its name in 1904 when Charles Elderton, who ran Hebburn's Theatre Royal, brought his Toreadors concert party troupe to perform there. The Spanish City became the Empress Ballroom in 1920.

In 1979 the Retundar Ballroom was converted into the starlight rooms for live entertainment. The Spanish City's funfair was extremely popular with fairground rides and amusements, including a 'Corkscrew' roller coaster, which is now at Flamingoland in Yorkshire, ghost train and waltzers.

The Dome has had a number of uses over the years as a ballroom, amusement arcade, and Laser Quest Laser Tag Arena, most recently it became a live music venue playing host to several bands including an appearance by Ash in 2001.

The demolition derby somehow survives as if in a land before lawyers, in a world in which every thrill has not yet been hemmed in by worries about whether someone might get hurt or be offended. A signature on a waiver, a $40 entry fee, a quick inspection of your vehicle -- doors chained shut, all glass removed but for the windshield, drivers wearing helmets and seat belts -- and you're ready to aim thousands of pounds of steel at your fellow man.

It's always rush hour at the five demolition derbies sponsored each year by the volunteer fire department in Arcadia, Md., where amateurs with barely running junkers sign up for sessions of aggressive driving therapy.

We're in Arcadia, Md., an otherwise quiet hamlet on the northwestern edge of Baltimore County, about an 80-minute drive from Washington, and here at the base of a gentle hillside in a dirt pit filled with nearly 2,000 spectators, the volunteer fire company is staging one of five derbies it holds annually.

Your average county or state fair may offer a demolition derby, and the commercial version is a fine show, real-life bumper cars having at each other in front of a grandstand full of vicarious thrill-seekers. But in Arcadia, they cater to people who live, as the track announcer says, "derby-style." This is seven hours of action, from roundy-round races in which cars chase each other in circles around the short track to the big event, the smash-and-crash derby in which there is no pretense of a race, just a bunch of vehicles thrown into the pit slamming into each other until all but the winner are stuck in the mud, spinning wheels and getting whacked until the checkered flag flies.
