The Nyungwe rainforest is most likely the best preserved montane rainforest in Africa. It's in the watershed between the basin of the Congo River to the W and the basin of the Nile to the E. From the E side of the Nyungwe forest comes also 1 of the branches of the Nile sources.
Nyungwe Forest NP was established in 2004 and covers an area of about 1,019 km2 of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs. The nearest town is Kamembe, 54 km to the W. Mount Bigugu is within the park borders. In 10/2020, the Rwanda Development Board signed an agreement with African Parks to assume management for an initial twenty years.
Nearly the entire thing runs along the river and a good portion of it is on top of an old pipe. A huge pipe. No, seriously, it’s huge so don’t fall off at the end.

This excursion along the lower reaches of the Hood River involves some aberrations of what is normally considered a “hike.” First, you’re on private land all the way, actually the route of the old penstock which led from the 1923 Powerdale Dam on the Hood River, decommissioned in 2010, to the powerhouse and gantry where you’ll begin the hike, all of this route having been turned over to the Columbia Land Trust by PacifiCorp in 2013. Young Hood Riverians blooded themselves hiking along the top of the nine-foot diameter penstock to reach “secret” beaches on the Hood River. Much of the penstock has been taken away. Unusually, however, part of the agreement for the transfer of ownership, in addition to restoration of fish habitat, was to preserve recreational use of the corridor. This provision is somewhat of a nightmare as the route trespasses on the Mount Hood Railroad’s right of way and also involves 0.6 miles of PacifiCorp’s catwalk atop the remaining section of penstock, the most interesting section of this hike.

The circle has a diameter of 30m (98 feet) and comprises 127 stones. Each stone is approximately 4m (13 feet tall) and somewhat irregular in shape.

The stones are believed to have been arranged in the circle c.1000 years ago, which has raised questions about previously unknown ancient civilisations.

There is some evidence that the stones have some astronomical basis, with the shadow of one stone disappearing during the winter solstice. If this is the case, the sophistication of Pre-european civilisations in South America was more advanced than previously thought.

The circle is now in the Parque Arqueológico do Solstício (Solstice Archaeological Park).

In April 1943, four local boys found the skeletal remains of a woman inside a large wych elm in the wood. Despite a police investigation, the woman has never been identified. However, there have been several theories about her identity. Some believe that she was a Nazi spy in the Clent Hills during WWII. Others believe a Third Reich cell killed her. The police theorise that she could have been a prostitute killed by a punter. The current location of her skeleton and autopsy report is unknown.
The standout tree species in the wood is the sessile oak, Quercus petraea. Other notable species are holly, hazel and rowan.

In Lost Rainforests of Britain, Guy Shrubsole claims that the oak tree is not what marks out Britian’s temperate rainforest, rather it is the other plants that grow on them, the epiphytes.

The most common epiphytes are lichens, bryophytes and ferns. On Street View the mosses and lichens can clearly be seen both on the trees and covering the rocks and boulders on the ground.
Through escapes from parks the Canada Goose is now established as a breeding bird.

The Canada Goose is the largest Branta species found in Britain it is easily identify by its black head and neck with white cheek patch. Their honking call is very similar to that of Whooper or Bewick Swan.

This species is characteristically a ground feeding bird which nests in swamps or on island in lakes.

Hainault Forest is owned and operated by the Woodland Trust which in 2023 opened its first ever staffed visitor hub in this area. It is London’s last medieval forest.

Woodland Trust is thinning out the trees in the forest to increase the light reaching the areas 6,000 hornbeams which were part of the ancient wood pasture in the area in earlier years.

It was a happy coincidence that during this thinning out process the Woodland Trust could supply a 21ft plank which perfectly fitted the requirements of a team recreating the 90ft longship uncovered at Sutton Hoo in 1939. The ship burial at Sutton Hoo is England’s oldest known ship.
It covers 214 sq mi and is centered on the Marojejy Massif, a mountain chain that rises to an elevation of 2,132 m. Access to the area around the massif was restricted to research scientists when the site was set aside as a strict nature reserve in 1952. In 1998, it was opened to the public as a national park. It became part of the World Heritage Site "Rainforests of the Atsinanana" in 2007.

The park has received plaudits in the NYT and Smithsonian Magazine for its natural beauty and rich biodiversity that encompasses critically endangered members of the silky sifaka. A global consortium of conservation organizations, including the Lemur Conservation Foundation, Duke Lemur Center, and Madagascar National Parks, have sought to promote research and conservation programs here. These organizations have implemented a variety of community-based initiatives to mitigate human encroachment on the park by encouraging local communities to engage in afforestation and silvicultural initiatives to promote a sustainable alternative to mining, slash-and-burn agriculture, & wood collection.

Listed as a World Heritage Site in danger from 2010 to 2025.

It's near the western bank of Lake Kivu and the Rwandan border. Established in 1970 by the Belgian photographer and conservationist Adrien Deschryver, the park is named after 2 dormant volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi and Mount Biega, within its limits. With an area of 6,000 sq km, Kahuzi-Biega is 1 of the largest national parks in the country. Set in mountainous and lowland terrain, it's one of the last refuges of the endangered species of Eastern lowland gorilla. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1980 for its unique biodiversity of rainforest habitat and its gorillas. In 1997, it was listed on the List of World Heritage in Danger because of the political instability of the region, an influx of refugees, and increasing wildlife exploitation.

It's part of the Sundarbans on the Ganges Delta and adjacent to the Sundarban Reserve Forest in Bangladesh. The delta is densely covered by mangrove forests, and is one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tiger. It's also home to many bird, reptile and invertebrate species, including the salt-water crocodile. The present Sundarban National Park was declared as the core area of Sundarban Tiger Reserve in 1973 and a wildlife sanctuary in 1977. On 5/4/84 it was declared a national park. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 1987, and was designated a Ramsar site in 2019. It's been considered a World Network of Biosphere Reserve (Man and Biosphere Reserve) since 1989.
