The Esztergom coal‑loading tower is a 1927 industrial structure built for transferring coal from the Dorog mines to Danube barges. Standing about 17 meters tall, it received coal via a 5.7‑km aerial ropeway and could load roughly 1,000 tons per day. Mine carts emptied into large bunkers, and chutes directed the coal into ships. Operations ended in 1963, and machinery was removed by 1970, leaving only the steel frame.

Longyearbyen - Northernmost town

Longyearbyen is the northernmost settlement with greater than 1,000 residents. (The town can be seen to the right) The town is known primarily as a coal mining town, having been established by the Artic Coal Company. Coal was moved from the mines to the port via aerial tramway. Behind in this picture is Mine 2b. It ceased operations in 1969 and is now a heritage site.

The town was almost destroyed in WWI by the German Navy (Kriegsmarine).

Jewett Mine
Texas Westmoreland Coal Co.’s Jewett Mine is a 35,000-acre surface mine complex located between Dallas and Houston. It currently operates five active pits. It supplies lignite (a grade of coal) under a full lignite requirements contract to the adjacent two-unit Limestone Electric Generating Station owned by NRG Texas. A low-cost, base-load power plant utilizing emission control technologies, Limestone was designed and built specifically to burn lignite from Jewett.

Limestone enjoys a solid position in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) regional power market, which is heavily weighted with natural gas-fired power generation and thus more expensive and price-volatile than a market more dependent on coal-fired power. The contract between Jewett and Limestone runs through 2018. The Jewett Mine has in-place capacity currently up to 6.5 million tons of lignite annually.

It owns or shares some records for terrestrial vehicle in the Guinness Book of Records. Bagger 293 was built in 1995, one of a group of similar sized 'sibling' vehicles such as the Bagger 281 (built in 1958), Bagger 285 (1975), Bagger 287 (1976), Bagger 288 (1978), Bagger 291 (1993), etc.

Monkwearmouth Colliery (or Wearmouth Colliery) was a major North Sea coal mine located on the north bank of the River Wear,located in Sunderland. It was the largest mine in Sunderland and one of the most important in County Durham in northeast England. First opened in 1835 and in spite of the many accidents at the pit, the mine was the last to remain operating in the County Durham Coalfield. The last shift left the pit on December 10, 1993, ending over 800 years of commercial coal mining in the region. The Colliery site was cleared a few years later, and the Stadium of Light, the football ground for Sunderland AFC, was built over it.

David Evans of the Evans-Bevan coal mining partnership, had wanted to call the colliery after his daughter, Isabella Bevan who cut the first sod on the land at Bryn Dulais farm with a silver spade on Monday, March 11 1872.[2] However, in light of superstition, and the fact that his own six sisters attended the ceremony, Evans agreed to call the mine Severn Sisters.[

Anthracite coal fields always suffer from blow out, and on the 10th of November 1907, one occurred which killed 5 men. In 1923, there were 607 men working at Seven Sisters, producing from the Furnace Four Feet, Brass and Nine Feet Big Vein seams. During World War 2 the colliery featured in an anti-Nazi film The Silent Village, made with the cooperation of the South Wales Miners Federation.

During the 1950s geological problems and changing economic conditions took their toll, and in May 1963 the colliery closed and the pit filled in. The men who had been employed at the Seven Sisters were transferred to the nearby Blaenant Colliery, which closed in 1990.

The Knox Mine disaster was a mining accident that took place in the Greater Pittston, Port Griffith, Pennsylvania village of Jenkins Township, Pennsylvania, near Pittston, on January 22, 1959.

The River Slope Mine, an anthracite coal mine owned by the Knox Coal Company, flooded when coal company management had the miners dig too close to the riverbed. Tunneling sharply upwards toward the Susquehanna River, the miners reduced the thickness of rock between the mineshafts and the river bed to about 6 feet (1.8 m) -- 35 feet (10.6 m) was considered the minimum for safety. This caused the waters of the river to break through into the mine.

It took 3 days to partially plug the hole in the riverbed, which was done by dumping railcars into the whirlpool formed by the water draining into the mine.

12 people died; 69 others escaped. One miner, Amadeo Pancetti, was awarded the Carnegie Medal for leading 32 miners to safety. The bodies of the 12 who died were never recovered, despite efforts of divers and an attempt to pump the water out of the shafts.

Twelve miners have been killed in a methane gas explosion at a coal mine in Ruda Slaska-Kochlowice, southern Poland, officials say.

The blast struck the Wujek-Slask mine on Friday morning, a spokeswoman for Poland's mines authority, Edyta Tomaszewska, told reporters.

She said 30 miners were taken to hospital. The blast occurred 1,050m (nearly 3,500ft) underground.

The miners were working more than a kilometre underground at the time.

Several of the injured have sustained severe burns, and medical staff have warned the death toll may rise.

Black Diamond Mine - Independent Shaft

This depression in the trees marks the location of a 710 foot deep sealed shaft, the most northerly mine entry in the Mt Diablo Coal Field.

The Independant Shaft was sunk in 1865. By 1867 the company had failed and the shaft became inactive except as a means of pumping water from the nearby Eureka Mine. It was opened again in a 1900 by the Pittsburg Mining Company but closed after less than a year. It is now completely sealed and all that remains are a small array of vertical iron spikes on which teh hoist works were mounted.

This inclined shaft was the entrance to the Eureka Coal Mine. Between 1860 and 1895, more than 150,000 tons of coal were hoisted to the surface. The slope is 290 feet long and descends at a pitch of 32 degrees.

Ten miners were in the middle of a 12-hour shift early Monday morning when a mine shaft collapsed, trapping six of the men. The other four were able to escape and are now helping in rescue efforts. It's believed the six miners are trapped 1,500 feet underground, 2,000 feet from the nearest access and nearly 4 miles from where they entered the mine.

Eckley Miners' Village

Eckley was founded in 1854 as a company owned and built anthracite-mining community and remained that way for 115 years. It included not only the mines and collieries but also the houses, churches, schools, hotel, and company store.

Eckley Miners' VillageThe entire village was owned by a series of coal companies during those years, and the houses were never sold to the occupants. As a result, very few changes were made to the surviving houses, and much of the original fabric of the houses has been retained.

It was for this reason Paramount Studios chose Eckley for on-site filming of the movie, The Molly Maguires. Paramount made some cosmetic restorations to the village, such as burying the power lines and building a reproduction breaker, company store, and mule barn.

At the end of the filming, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce saw the potential the village had and negotiated the purchase of the town. They formed the Anthracite Historic Site Museum, Inc., and three years later donated the property to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to be administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). The village is part of the PHMC's Anthracite Museum Complex, which includes four museums in a 70-mile arc throughout the region. Each museum deals with the general history of the region from pre-history to the present.

In 1971, when the village became a museum, over 200 people still resided in the houses. These residents provided extensive oral historical information for the initial research on the Village. Today, only a few residents remain, but they, along with former residents, continue to provide information and insight that is useful in the museum's research, restoration projects, exhibits, and interpretive programming. Eckley today has a Visitor’s Center, which houses a number of exhibits on aspects of life in an anthracite community (including the work life of both men and women), education, religion, and recreation.

This is likely to be related to Peabody Energy's No. 16 mine, but I can't confirm that.

The Hambach opencast coal mine has recently been brought to full output capacity through the addition of the No. 293 giant bucket wheel excavator. This is the largest machine in the world; it is twice as long as a soccer field and as tall as a building with 30 floors. To uncover the 2.4 billion tons of brown coal (lignite) found at Hambach, five years were required to remove a 200-m-thick layer of waste sand and to redeposit it off site. The mine currently yields 30 million tons of lignite annually, with annual capacity scheduled to increase to 40 million tons in coming years. [ElMagnifico]
