Auckland Castle, also known as Auckland Palace, is a former bishop's palace located in the town of Bishop Auckland in County Durham, England. The castle was a residence of the bishops of Durham from approximately 1183 and was their primary residence between 1832 and 2012, when the castle and its contents were sold to the Auckland Castle Trust. It is now a tourist attraction, but still houses the bishop's offices.

Known to generations of São Paulo residents as Castelinho da Rua Apa, or "the little castle of Apa Street," what seems at first glance to be nothing more than the crumbling façade of an eccentric home is actually the site of a notorious murder mystery. Commissioned in 1912, the street Apa’s castle was built in the Santa Efigênia neighborhood — at the time one of the most noble areas of the city. Designed to resemble a medieval castle, patriarch Dr. Virgílio Cézar dos Reis had the family manor built as a gift to his wife, Maria Cândida Guimarães dos Reis. The father died in 1937. Two months later, the children and their mother were found murdered on the floor of the castle. For the next 70-some years, the famous house sat abandoned, though it has now been mostly renovated.

It was part of the defensive system of the Ferrol estuary . It is a Site of Cultural Interest since 1994.

It is a construction dating back to 1597 located in a cove at the entrance to the Ferrol estuary , opposite the castle of San Felipe . It lacked weapons and its function was limited to surveillance of the sea passage. The current building was built at the end of the 19th century .

Its last function was as a military prison, where, among others, the coup plotter and former Civil Guard Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero , who was one of the main leaders of the coup attempt on February 23, 1981 in Spain , was imprisoned. popularly known as 23-F .

At the beginning of the 21st century, it was acquired by a hotel chain and is in a state of abandonment, waiting for the restoration and refurbishment works to begin

This is the most important military construction in Ferrol. Located opposite the Castillo de la Palma (in Mugardos) and the now-vanished Castillo de San Martiño, the three fortifications made the Ferrol Estuary impregnable, a "triangle of fire" that no enemy power of Spain dared to attack. At night, the castles of San Felipe and La Palma were linked by a chain, thus preventing the passage of enemy ships. Admiral Pitt is credited with saying that if Great Britain had an estuary like this, with its castles, they would protect it with a wall of silver.

Construction of the castle began in 1557, commissioned by Philip II, from whom it takes its name. However, the building we see today dates from the 18th century, when it was remodeled. The major works on the castle were finally completed in 1775. In the 18th century, San Felipe was considered an example of a bastioned battery.

This design featured, on one hand, an area of ​​cannon batteries facing the sea, and on the other hand, a system of bastions—or projecting walls—covering the flanks of the curtain walls (the front walls). These bastions also served to repel attacks from land.

Nagahama Castle was built 1575-1576 by Hashiba Hideyoshi in the village then called Imahama, renaming the area Nagahama. Previously, he had ruled from Odani Castle, though found this hard to do as it was a yamashiro. Hideyoshi was succeeded as lord by Yamanouchi Kazutoyo after the 1583 Battle of Shizugatake. Kazutoyo was then replaced by Naito Nobunari after the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. In 1615, the castle was demolished, although parts of it were used in the construction of Hikone Castle.

The Velasco Castle is located on the northeastern edge of the town of Villalpando, in the Tierra de Campos region, in the northwest of the province of Zamora.
The original Velasco Castle, the palace of the Constables of Castile, dates back to the 12th century. The first two Constables of the Velasco family lived in the old Gothic palace. In the 15th century, it was burned down by the Comuneros, and on its ruins, Constable Íñigo I built another palace. It was renovated in the 16th century.
Its walls were surrounded by a moat sixty feet wide and forty feet deep. It was divided into three stories and underground levels. Currently, only remnants of two exterior walls remain.
Its walls were constructed partly of ashlar masonry and partly of earth and river stones.
It is in a state of ruin. Only a few vestiges remain. It is privately owned and houses a water reservoir.

The Vilanova dos Infantes Tower stands on top of a hill in the center of the medieval town of Vilanova dos Infantes , a few kilometers from the capital of the municipality, Celanova , in the province of Ourense . It was named a Site of Cultural Interest on April 22, 1949.

According to tradition, Ilduara, mother of San Rosendo, founded a monastery in Vilanova in the year 940. This female monastery, now gone, is likely to have housed two daughters of Alfonso XO Sabio .

In this castle the parents of San Rosendo would live towards the 927 , and probably they were his constructors.

It is built of ashlar masonry and features pointed arches with a barrel vault. It underwent later renovations.
It opens between two crenellated towers, which, above the pointed archway, are joined by a section of wall. Within this wall, separated by an empty niche, are the coat of arms of the town and that of the Velasco family, framed by a Franciscan cord in the style of an alfiz (a rectangular molding).

The defunct Palace-Fortress of the Counts of Andrade was located in the area currently occupied by the market and the "Pilón" fountain, in Praza do Conde. Its construction started by Fernán Pérez de Andrade between 1370-1380, it had a double residential and defensive function. Of the complex, made up of the palace, the chapel of San Miguel and the tower, today only the latter building remains.

Popularly known as El Torreón, its walls are up to 2.35 meters thick, it is square in plan and measures 11.50 meters wide by 18 meters high. Counting the ground floor there are four floors. Apart from the loopholes and doors with arches, some slightly pointed, its Gothic windows stand out. The one on the third floor is made up of lobed arches separated by a mullion, on which there is an oculus with tracery.

César Tower was probably built in the 2nd part of the 12th century during the reign of Henry I, Count of Champagne. An earlier tower at this site was already mentioned in 1137. It was built on a motte at the high point of the medieval town. Originally the tower was not roofed but crowned with battlements. The Castle of Wewelsburg in its current triangular plan was constructed between 1603 and 1609 for the Prince-Bishops of Paderborn.

During WWII, the SS leader, Heinrich Himmler, had grand designs for the dilapidated castle which were, however, never fully realised and on 30 March 1945 Himmler ordered that the castle be destroyed.

When the US Third infantry arrived on 31 March 1945 only the wallS remained and the interior was in ashes.

Today there is a museum at the castle entrance, which has been converted into one of Germany's largest youth hostels. The museum relates the history of the SS and pays tribute to its many victims.

Valença (Valença do Minho) is a fortress town on the south bank of the Minho River.

Valença’s hilltop position offered excellent defensive qualities overlooking the Minho River to protect the country from invasion form its neighbour’s Spain and France. The defences of the town where originally developed during the 13th century.

The town’s walls and moats which can be seen today date from the 17th and 18 centuries and largely intact. They clearly illustrate how the town was able to hold out in several sieges by Spanish and French forces.

The Minho River marks the boarder with Spain for much of its 340km (210 miles) length.

On Thursday 27th October 2022, Markus DL/HB9BRJ/P, a radio amateur from Switzerland reached the summit of Burg Hohenzollern and activated this summit on the amateur radio bands for the Summits on the Air (“SOTA”) group.

He made 10 contacts in total working on the 20 metre HF amateur radio band.

The summit of Burg Hohenzollern is 850 metres (2789 feet) asl. It has a rating of 10 points on the SOTA group database.

The ruins of a 16th or 17th century fortress can be found in the small village of Sno in the Kazbegi Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in north-eastern Georgia.

Sno village is off the Military highway in in the northeast of Georgia in a wide glaciated valley and was the birthplace of Illia the Catholicos of the Georgian Church.

The ruins of the fortress consist of a tall square contained with a partially destroyed exterior circular wall. The castle is situated next to the bridge which crosses the river in the heart of the village.

Ostrov chateau

Ostrov is a castle in the town of the same name in the district of Karlovy Vary. The castle complex consists of a large complex of several buildings of various ages, which is connected on the west side by an eleven-hectare park with a summer house and other small architecture. It was established after the Thirty Years' War by the reconstruction of the older Šlikov residence. It acquired its preserved form during the Classicist reconstruction at the end of the eighteenth century and later modifications. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964. After extensive reconstruction in 2012–2014, the chateau buildings serve the needs of the city and the public - town hall, town library, exhibition spaces.

Červený hrádek is an early Baroque chateau on the northern edge of Jirkov in the Chomutov district. It was built in 1655 by Jan Adam Hrzán of Harasov. The construction site of the chateau was a rocky promontory at the foot of the Ore Mountains, on which Borek Castle used to stand. The chateau complex has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963. There is a large park and the castle park in the vicinity of the chateau.
