The Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center was an 800-bed jail barge used to hold inmates for the New York City Department of Corrections. The barge was anchored off the Bronx's southern shore, across from Rikers Island, near Hunts Point. It was built for $161 million at Avondale Shipyard in Louisiana, along the Mississippi River near New Orleans, and brought to New York in 1992 to reduce overcrowding in the island's land-bound buildings for a lower price. Nicknamed "The Boat" by jail staff and inmates, it was designed to handle inmates from medium- to maximum-security in 16 dormitories and 100 cells.

Akademik Lomonosov, Floating Nuclear Power Station

Akademik Lomonosov is a non-self-propelled power barge that operates as the first Russian floating nuclear power station. The ship was named after academician Mikhail Lomonosov. It is docked in the Pevek harbour, providing heat to the town and supplying electricity to the regional Chaun-Bilibino power system. It is the world’s northernmost nuclear power plant.

Hong Kong Derrick Barges

The Hong Kong Derrick Barges are a form of Lighter barge which are the modern equivalent of traditional sampans.

Hong Kong Derrick Barges (aka Hong Crane Barges) are a specialist type of work ship which has a Derick Crane. They are used for loading and unloading cargo ships which are not alongside a quay.

Typically modern Derrick Barges are 60m in length and have a beam of 25m. They are capable of handling containers up to 4,500 tons.

Built in 1931, the barge was christened as Vertrouwen, meaning "trust" in Dutch. It worked as a normal barge for 60 years. Today it is a floating hotel cruising on the Caledonian Canal, including Loch Ness.

The Snarestone Wharf is a mooring on the Ashby Canal close to the village of Snarestone.

At the wharf there is a pedestrian swing bridge, a sanitation station, water point and a picnic area

The Ashby Canal Association provides a car park and slipway at the Wharf for the use of its members. The Association has been instrumental in the reopening of sections of the Ashby Canal which were closed due to mining subsidence.

On Street View in January 2022 the motorboat “Ram” owned by the Ashby Canal Association is moored at the Snarestone Whaft.

The McBarge, officially named the Friendship 500, was a McDonald's restaurant, built on a barge for Expo '86 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Moored on Expo grounds in Vancouver's False Creek, it was the second floating McDonald's location in the world, intended to showcase future technology and architecture. Although the floating design allowed for the barge to operate in a new location following the exhibition, the derelict McBarge has since 1991 been anchored empty in Burrard Inlet, amid industrial barges and an oil refinery.

The restaurant by designed by Robert Allan Ltd. for Expo '86 and was one of five McDonald's locations on the Expo grounds, all of which were constructed for a total of $12 million. It was initially intended to be used as a McDonald's restaurant after Expo '86, but the barge remained empty at the Expo grounds until 1991, when the new owner of the grounds forced McDonald's to remove it. It has since been anchored derelict in Burrard Inlet, north of Burnaby, British Columbia.

quot;CNet reported Friday that a barge in San Francisco Bay stacked high with shipping containers may be a floating data center being built by Google. A nearly identical facility has appeared in a harbor in Portland, Maine, according to the Portland Press-Herald.

Both barges are owned by “By and Large. LLC,” which is a mysterious company whose name echoes a fictional corporation from Wall-E and other Pixar films. CNet has found numerous hints that the firm is tied to Google, which has a history of using LLCs to seed its data center projects.

But is it a data center? San Francisco’s KPIX reports that the building is indeed a Google initiative, but is actually a secret marketing barge to promote Google Glass, the company’s new wearable tech offering. The TV station said work has been halted because Google doesn’t have permits to park the barge at San Francisco’s Fort Mason, as it had hoped. "

The Vernon C. Bain Center (VCBC) is an 800-bed jail barge used to hold inmates for New York City as part of the New York City Department of Corrections as part of the vast Rikers Island jail complex. Built in New Orleans for $161 million and brought to New York in 1992 to reduce overcrowding in the island's land-bound buildings for a lower price under a David Dinkins-led crime initiative, it is designed to handle inmates from medium- to maximum-security in 16 dormitories and 100 cells. Due to the facility being on the water, a minimum of three maritime crew is maintained under Coast Guard regulations.

It was opened in 1992 and was named for Vernon C. Bain, a warden who died in a car accident. In the same accident Officer Theresa M. Brown and her nine year old daughter Tracy Hope Diaz, were severely injured. It has been used by the city of New York as a prison, but has also temporarily held juvenile inmates.

Dapdune Wharf is a former wharf on the Wey and Godalming Navigations in Guildford, England, UK, close to the Surrey County Cricket Club ground. It is now maintained by the National Trust.

Although no longer used as a goods transshipment point, the wharf is the starting point for boat trips, including boat hire and horse-drawn boat trips. The Visitor Centre has interactive displays, a smithy, a stable, and an original Wey Barge, the Reliance.

JensPotsdam in GE Forums points out that this ship appears five times along this same stretch of river. The airplane taking strips of photos was crossing its path at the same rate it moved up stream.

With the retreat of Stone Point, Horsey Island has become increasingly vulnerable to wave attack. In 1988 a barrage breakwater of sunken barges was put in position. Since then, in a near-desperate attempt to ‘hold the line’ nearly half a million cubic metres of material dredged from the Harwich deep water channel has been deposited to the north and south of the Walton Backwaters entrance and onto the vulnerable northeast corner of Horsey Island (see map above) during the past fifteen years (source: Environment Agency 2005). Due to natural wave action, much of this material had simply been carried back out to sea!

The Florida Avenue Bridge is a vertical lift bridge spanning the Industrial Canal in New Orleans, Louisiana. The bridge has one railroad track, two vehicle lanes and two sidewalks.

The existing lift bridge was completed in May 2005, replacing a Strauss trunnion bascule bridge which provided only 91 feet (18.6 m) of horizontal clearance for marine traffic.

Founded by George Washington Shaver in 1880, Shaver Transportation's early business included long runs to Idaho through the rapids of the Snake River. But much of the company's early work consisted of local transportation of timber, agricultural products and people on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, which were the Interstate 84 and Interstate 5 of the era. The first Portland bridge across the Willamette wasn't completed until 1887.

Many of the steamships were shallow-draft sternwheelers, which were very maneuverable and durable. Some were capable of steaming up smaller rivers like the Yamhill as far as Dayton. One business partner of Shaver bragged that he could get a steamship "anywhere where the roses are wet with dew."

Much of Shaver's current business consists of bringing wheat from inland Columbia ports back to the Port of Portland, which accounts for almost one-third of U.S. wheat exports, second only to New Orleans.

'Boss 400' - wreck of South Africa's largest floating crane

Standing above Kabonkelberg mountain range overlooking Moari Bay below notoriously known for its Shipwrecks. There you will be able to view the spectacular remains of the wreck of the Boss 400 which ran a ground in a Cape winter storm in 1995.
The Boss 400 was the biggest floating crane in Africa when the towing lines broke and hit the rocks in a storm.

Being a barge and having no main engines of its own it had to be towed to wherever it was working in the world. It had been used in the industry to pick up huge pipes.

The tug that had the towing operation was underpowered and not up to the job. They found themselves unable to cope with the conditions and radioed through to Cape Town harbor to ask for assistance.

Although two tugs were dispatched they were unable to get any lines onto the boss 400 due to the extremely rough seas. It is said a while later the original line snapped and the Boss 400 found itself blowing onto the rocks in Maori Bay were she has been lying ever since.

All 14 crew that had been aboard the Boss 400 were airlifted to safety.

At the time of the stranding, the Boss 400 was one of the most powerful crane barges in the world capable of lifting 1200 tons and valued at over 70 million US$. Due to the immense value of the vessel, a salvage team was dispatched but the back of the vessel was too badly broken and the salvage attempt had to abandoned.
