Cape Isabel & Cape Inscription are two members of the Cape I class of Ro-Ro cargo ships in service with the Military Sealift Command as part of the Ready Reserve Force (RRF). Both ships were laid down at Bath Iron Works in the mid 1970's as commercial cargo ships and served in those trades until they were both sold to MARAD in the mid 1980's and converted for US Navy use.

Both ships are maintained here at their Long Beach layberth in ROS-5 status, meaning they can be ready for deployment in 5 days or less. Both ships were activated and deployed in early 2007 and trasported cargo and vehicles for the US Army's 81st Armor Brigade to Kuwait as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

USS Acadia (AD-42) is a Yellowstone-class destroyer tender. She was commissioned on 6 June 1981.

In 1991, when the ship returned to San Diego from the deployment, thirty-six women were missing from the ship, the result of medical transfers for pregnancy. Nevertheless, the tender nicknamed the "Love Boat" received the Navy Unit Commendation for her exemplary service during the Gulf War.

Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) Fort Austin (A386)

RFA Fort Austin (A386) is a fleet stores ship of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Fort Austin was laid down at Scott Lithgow in 1975, launched in 1978 and commissioned in 1979. These ships were designed to carry a wide range of stores to support other ships, ammunition, food, expolsives. They have extensive aviation facilities,with two flight decks, one to the stearn and one spot on top of the hanger,up to four Sea Kings can be stored in the large hanger. These ships also have the capability to replenish ships at sea, via six RAS points. When the Falklands War began, the ship headed south, taking part in the landings at San Carlos Water as an ammunition ship. In 2000, the ship was part of the British deployment to help restore order in Sierra Leone.

As of September 2007, the ship is undergoing a major refit and modernisation at the A&P Tyne shipyard in Hebburn, Tyne and Wear.

Controversial US Navy ships in England to be scrapped

In 2003 Able UK Limited won a contract to dismantle, for the recovery of scrap metal, 13 former US Naval Reserve ships. The ships were to be dismantled in a 26 acre dry dock facility on the Tees Estuary.

The ships are owned by US Maritime Administration (MARAD) and had become known in the US as "ghost ships" since they were anchored for years in the James River, Virginia, without anyone on board. The name became a major factor in generating media interest.

The USNS WATERS was acquired for multi-purpose surveys, and became operational at the end of FY1996. Built for the Military Sealift Command (MSC) at a cost of $104.4 million, the Waters replaced the USNS Mizar (T-AGOR 11). Mizar was special-mission ocean survey / "ocean engineering" ship which undertook a variety of covert "ocean engineering" missions in support of surveillance operations and the recovery of sunken hardware of interest to the intelligence community. Funding for that Waters's operations was reduced soon after her completion, and the ships was been converted to support additional missile range instrumentation and submarine navigation research support missions.

Survey Ships gather data which provides much of the military's information on the ocean environment. Oceanographic and hydrographic survey ships are used to study the world's oceans. The collected data helps to improve technology in undersea warfare and enemy ship detection. The oceanographic and hydrographic survey ships' multibeam, wide-angle precision sonar systems make it possible to continuously chart a broad strip of ocean floor. Military Sealift Command's Special Missions program supports worldwide oceanographic programs with ships which perform acoustical, biological, physical and geophysical surveys.

The Etna (A5326) is a naval replenishment and logistic support ship built for the Italian Navy by Fincantieri at their Riva Trigoso Naval Shipyard. Fincantieri were awarded the contract for the Etna in July 1995, and the ship was launched in July 1997. Following successful sea trials in November 1997 the ship was delivered in February 1998.

The purpose of the Marina Militare MM Etna is to fully support the long-range missions of a naval squadron, which would typically include an aircraft carrier and complete escort. The logistic support vessel has to be in position to refuel the squadron, including the air wing of the carrier, and also provide full logistic support in terms of repair workshops, spare parts, ammunition replenishment and supplies.

MM Etna is also capable of performing civil protection roles at times of crisis. The ship has high autonomous capacity to provide electrical power, fresh water and prepared meals and also has fully equipped hospital and medical facilities on board.

A Roll-On/Roll-Off [RO/RO] ship is specifically designed to carry wheeled and tracked vehicles as all or most of its cargo. Vehicles are driven or towed on and off the ship by means of either the ship's own ramps or shore-based ramps. Because it is designed to accommodate cargoes which cannot be stacked but which vary in height, below-deck space and volume utilization is generally less efficient than on a containership. RO/RO ships are thus commercially viable only in certain specialized trades. However, the RO/RO is the preferred ship type for deployment of military unit equipment. The military advantages of RO/RO ships include the capability for rapid loading and discharge of military vehicles and non-self-deployable aircraft, and open deck areas well suited to the carriage of outsized military cargo.
