The Pilar is a 38 foot (12 meter) fishing boat owned by Ernest Hemingway from 1934 to his death in 1961. Upon his death the boat was left to his captain Gregorio Fuentes. Today the boat resides at Hemingway's Havana house, Finca Vigia.

'Discovery' Replica

The original 'Discovery' was one of three ships that left London in December 1606 and arrived in Chesapeake Bay in April 1607. In May 1607, the settlers landed in an area that went on to become Jamestown, Virginia. This replica 'Discovery' was a gift to mark the 402nd anniversary of the departure of the three ships from London.

Westenhanger Castle, where the replica is located, is linked to the 'Discovery' as the then owner,
Sir Thomas Smythe, commissioned the building of several ships including the original 'Discovery'.

The Umiaq was a traditional rowing boat in tha Arctic area made of skin from whales, walrus or seals. In Greenland it was only allowed for women to row them. Other areas it was also allowed for men.

Now and then at festivals they are taken to water to show them in action. This one is on display at Uummannaq Museum.

Huáscar is a 19th century small armoured turret ship of a type similar to a monitor. She was built in Britain for Peru and played a significant role in the battle of Pacocha and the War of the Pacific against Chile before being captured and commissioned with the Chilean Navy. Today she is one of the few surviving ships of her type. The ship has been restored and is currently commissioned as a memorial ship. She is named after the 16th century Inca emperor, Huáscar.

HMAS Orion was laid down by Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company at Greenock, Scotland on 6 October 1972, launched on 16 September 1974, and commissioned into the RAN on 15 June 1977.

HMAS Orion paid off into reserve at Garden Island, Western Australia in 1996. She remained there for several years, until she was marked for disposal as scrap in September 2003. Efforts to hand her over to a State Government for preservation as a museum ship or sinking as a dive wreck failed, and submissions for disposal companies were closed off on 6 August 2004. The submarine was scrapped by Tenix at Henderson, Western Australia in December 2006. The sail was given to the City of Rockingham and is now mounted as a permanent memorial at Naval Memorial Park, Rockingham Western Australia.

Intact Bedan (type of Dhow) just off the main road between Umm Ar Rusais and Safaiq. A Bedan is an old type of Omani fishing and trading vessel. They were used in the 19th century and perhaps even earlier, all the way from Oman to Zanzibar, sailing along the coast.

This vessel, known as Al Khamman, belongs to a Sheikh Khalifa bin Khamis al Majaali and was built in 1938.

This steamship played a key role in the battle of Stalingrad, bringing supplies and people across the Volga. She was several times damaged during her work and eventually sunk in October 1942. The ship was repaired in the spring of 1943 and remained in service untill 1947. It became a memorial in 1977.

The text on the granite memorial stone reads:

"Eternal fame to the river boats and firefighters of the Volga-bassin - heroes of the Civil War, defenders of red Tsaritsyn. Never will the Soviet nation forget the brave sons of the Volga, who exceeded in the fighting for Stalingrad."

The Batavia was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). She was built in Amsterdam in 1628, and had 24 cast-iron cannons. The Batavia was shipwrecked on her maiden voyage, and made famous by the subsequent mutiny and massacre that took place among the survivors. A twentieth century replica of the ship is also called the Batavia.
A replica of the Batavia was built at the Bataviawerf in Lelystad in the Netherlands. The project lasted from 1985 to 7 April 1995, and was conducted as an employment project for young people under master-shipbuilder Willem Vos. The shipyard is currently reconstructing another 17th century ship, which, in contrast to the merchant ship Batavia, the new replica is a man-of-war, the Zeven Provinciën; Michiel de Ruyters' flagship.

This Batavia replica was built with traditional materials, such as oak and hemp and using the tools and methods of the time of construction of the original ship. For the design, good use was made of the remains of the original ship in Fremantle (and of the Vasa in Stockholm) as well as historical sources, like 17th century building descriptions (actual building plans were not made at the time) and prints and paintings by artists (who at the time generally painted fairly true to nature) of similar ships.

On 25 September 1999, the new Batavia was transported to Australia by barge and moored at the National Maritime Museum in Sydney. In 2000, the Batavia was the flagship for the Dutch Olympic Team during the 2000 Olympic Games.

On 12 June 2001, the ship returned to Bataviawerf in Lelystad and is currently on display to visitors.

PS Comet - Europe's first commercially successful steamboat

Duke of Lancaster is one of the last surviving railway steamers in the UK. She was built in 1956 to carry railway passengers over the Irish Sea from Heysham to Belfast. She was also used for cruising on European waters until 1966. In 1970 she was converted to a car ferry. She was laid up in 1978 and sold to a company for use as static amusement ship, known as "Fun Ship". It has been slowly rusting and deteriorating for many years and her future seems uncertain.

HMS Cavalier (D73) is a retired C-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. She was laid down by J. Samuel White and Company at East Cowes on 28 March 1943, launched on 7 April 1944, and commissioned on 22 November 1944.[1] She served in World War II and in various commissions in the Far East until she was decommissioned in 1972. After decommissioning she was preserved as a museum ship and currently resides at Chatham Historic Dockyard.

HMS Gannet was a Royal Navy Doterel-class screw sloop launched on 31 August 1878. She became a training ship in the Thames in 1903, and was then lent as a training ship for boys in the Hamble from 1913. She was preserved in 1987 and forms part of the Core Collection of the UK's National Historic Fleet.

HMS Ocelot (S17) was an Oberon-class diesel-electric submarine laid down by HM Dockyard at Chatham in Kent on 17 November 1960, launched on 5 May 1962 and commissioned on 31 January 1964. Joined the 3rd Flotilla based at Faslane Naval Base.

HMS Ocelot paid off in August 1991 as the conventional submarine fleet of the RN began to decline, making way for the nuclear fleet. She was sold in 1992 and preserved as a museum in Chatham Historic Dockyard.

Foxtrot B-39 (U 475) was built in 1967, and used specifically for training foreign submariners - Libyan, Cuban and Indian.

She was in active service with the Russian Baltic Fleet until April 1, 1994, having spent 27 years in active service.The vessel arrived in London from the naval base in Riga, Latvia, in July 1994 under the command of its Captain Vitalij Burda who bid official farewell to his second home for the last 23 years. She was at Long's Wharf, Thames Barrier untill 1998 and then moved to Folkestone.

HMS Warrior was the first iron-hulled, armor-plated warship, built for the Royal Navy in response to the first ironclad warship, the French La Gloire, launched a year earlier.

When completed in October 1861, Warrior was by far the largest, fastest, most heavily-armed and most heavily-armored warship the world had ever seen. She was almost twice the size of La Gloire and thoroughly outclassed the French ship in speed, armor, and gunnery.

Warrior did not introduce any radical new technology, but for the first time combined steam engines, rifled breech-loading guns, iron construction, iron armor, and propeller drive all in one ship, and built to unprecedented scale.

Her construction started intense competition between guns and armour that lasted until air power made battleships obsolete in the Second World War. This race caused her to quickly become obsolete, and she was withdrawn as a fighting unit in May 1883. Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, Core Collection, she is now a museum ship in Portsmouth, United Kingdom.

Submarine HMS Hajen (1904)

The Hajen (Shark) was the first submarine of the Royal Swedish Navy. She is a small submarine of the Holland type, constructed by the Swedish navy engineer Carl Richson who had previously studied J.P Holland’s submarine designs in the U.S. In 1909 two additional submarines were launched and the Hajen is thereafter known as U-boat No. 1.

In 1916 Hajen was modified at Bergsunds Mekaniska Verkstad, Stockholm, Sweden. The Avance engine was replaced by a diesel motor. She was also fitted with a deck platform and fore ship. Hajen was decommissioned in 1922. She was then stripped of machinery and the complete inside fitting. Until 1932 she was moored and used for depot duties.

The Hajen is today exhibited on land by the Naval Museum in Karlskrona. She was included into the museums collections already in 1932. The submarine is today presented with the same exterior as it had after the modification in 1916.

Glass bottomed boat 'Margruss'

At the turn of the century (1900 that is), a small fleet of glass bottomed boats would take vacationers to the Monterey Peninsula on excursions to view the magnificent kelp forests that are famous for this area.

The interpretive sign in front of the boat states:

"These boats were first introduced here at Lovers Point in the early 1890's. Launched from the narrow cove's wooden pier, the boats offered passengers a canopied window to the underwater flora and fauna around Lovers Point.

Nathaniel Roscoe "Dad" Sprague owned and operated a small fleet of these boats for 50 years. His son Russell took over the concession in 1948. Later, the boats operated under a variety of owners until the mid 1970's."

This replica boat was designed by Monterey Bay Boatworks' master boatbuilder Frank Siino and fabricated by welder Gary Goulart to echo Sprague's early boats. The swan heads - salvaged from the last of the original boats and donated by Realtor William Smith - were restored by maritime historian Tom Fordham. Christened the Margruss (after Margaret and Russell Sprague) in 1997, it was placed here in 2008 by the Heritage Society of Pacific Grove to commemorate the strong hold the glass bottom swan boats have on our memory."

The SS Klondike was the name of two sternwheelers, the second now a national historic site located in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. Both ran freight between Whitehorse and Dawson City along the Yukon River from 1921-1936 and 1936-1950, respectively.

The Klondike I was built in 1921 and had the distinction of having 50% more capacity than a regular sternwheeler, while still having the shallow draft and meeting the size requirements in order to travel down the Yukon River. Klondike I had a cargo capacity of 270 metric tonnes without having to push a barge.

Lifeboats must be fast and unusually seaworthy. They are equipped with triple screw drive as well as medical equipment and various navigation and communication devices for the search of damaged ships and survivors. For actions in shallow water a small auxiliary boat can be lowered. The ships of the "Theodor Heuss" class were constructed after long test series and became models for the later development of lifeboats of the German Maritime Rescue Service (Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger). The lifeboat "H. H. Meier" was built in 1960 as the last ship of this class, and therefore it was renamed "Theodor Heuss" when it was bequeathed to the Deutsches Museum in 1987.

This 131 feet long wooden schooner sank in a storm on April 9, 1894. It was made of white oak in 1876 in nearby Manitowoc.

It's remains were discovered in 1990 during preparations for building a new marina. It was raised in 1992 and is displayed in a nearby park along the shore of Lake Michigan.

USS Little Rock (CG-4 — ex-CL-92, ex-CLG-4) was a United States Navy Cleveland class light cruiser that was later converted to a Galveston class guided missile cruiser. She was laid down by Cramp Shipbuilding Co., Philadelphia, Pa., 6 March 1943; launched 27 August 1944.

After her decommissioning, Little Rock was taken to Buffalo, New York, where she is open to public touring at the Buffalo Naval & Military Park.

USS Silversides (SS/AGSS-236) is a Gato-class submarine.

Her keel was laid down on 4 November 1940 by the Mare Island Navy Yard in Vallejo, California. She was launched on 26 August 1941 and commissioned on 15 December 1941.

USS Silversides received twelve battle stars for World War II service, and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. She is credited with sinking 23 ships, the third-most of any allied World War II submarine, behind only the USS Tang and USS Tautog. The tonnage of the ships sunk by Silversides amounted to 90,080 tons, second only to the Tang's total. Judged by such standards, Silversides has the most prolific combat record of any still-extant American submarine.

Silversides was used for exterior scenes in the 2002 film, Below to depict the fictional USS Tiger Shark. She was towed in Lake Michigan for filming. The movie was a total flop, earning only $589,000 at the box office and went almost unnoticed to film goers across the globe.

Falls of Clyde is the last surviving iron-hulled, four-masted full rigged ship, and the only remaining sail-driven oil tanker. Designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1989, she is presently a museum ship in Honolulu, but has deteriorated to poor condition and is not open to the public. In September 2008, ownership was transferred to a new nonprofit organization which intends to restore her.

Dapdune Wharf is a former wharf on the Wey and Godalming Navigations in Guildford, England, UK, close to the Surrey County Cricket Club ground. It is now maintained by the National Trust.

Although no longer used as a goods transshipment point, the wharf is the starting point for boat trips, including boat hire and horse-drawn boat trips. The Visitor Centre has interactive displays, a smithy, a stable, and an original Wey Barge, the Reliance.

The SS Valley Camp is a freighter boat that served on the Great Lakes for almost 50 years and is currently serving as a museum ship in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The Valley Camp was launched in Lorain, Ohio, in 1917 as the Louis W. Hill for the National Steel Corporation. She sailed for this company for 38 years hauling iron ore and coal until 1955 when she was sold to the Wilson Marine Transit Company. It was in this fleet that she received her current name. For this company she carried a wider array of bulk goods including grains and stone. The Valley Camp was a member of the Wilson Fleet only until 1959 when the Republic Steel Corporation bought her and several of her Wilson fleetmates, including her identical sister the Silver Bay (formerly the Albert Heiken of National Steel). Republic kept the Valley Camp's name, and for that company she hauled iron ore and coal to their mills in Buffalo, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; and Indiana Harbor, Indiana. In 1967, the Valley Camp sailed her last. Her age was not an issue at this time, it was her triple expansion engine that was still being fed by coal burning boilers that doomed her to an early retirement.

The Redoutable (S 611) was the lead ship of her class of ballistic missile submarine in the French Marine Nationale.

Commissioned on 1 December 1971, she was the first French SNLE (Sous-marin Nucléaire Lanceur d'Engins, "Device-Launching Nuclear Submarine"). She was fitted with 16 M1 ballistic missiles, delivering 450kt at 2000 kilometres. In 1974, she was refitted with the M2 missile, and later with the M20, each delivering a one-megatonne warhead at a range over 3000 kilometres. The Redoutable ("formidable" or "fearsome" in French language) was the only ship of her class not to be refitted with the M4 missile.

The Redoutable had a 20-year duty history, with 51 patrols. She was decommissioned in 1991. In 2000, she was removed from the water in a purpose built dry dock, and over two years was made into an exhibition. This was a monumental task, the biggest of which was removing the Nuclear Reactor and replacing the mid section with an empty steel tube. This opened in 2002, where she is used as a museum ship at the Cité de la mer in Cherbourg, being now the largest submarine open to the public.

Ned Hanlan (tugboat)

The Ned Hanlan is a steam-powered tugboat that spent her career in Toronto, Ontario. She displaces approximately 200 tons, and is currently mounted beside a former nautical museum housed in the old Stanley Barracks on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto.

The Ned Hanlan is in reasonably good shape, with little rust, and a slight dent in her port gunwale just fore of the wheelhouse. The screw and rudder have been removed.

The tugboat is named after Ned Hanlan, a 19th century Toronto resident, and world champion rower.

KZ1 'Big Boat' - 1988 Americas Cup Yacht

The KZ1 yacht was the 1988 America's Cup challenger from New Zealand.

KZ1, designed by Bruce Farr, was skippered by David Barnes along with a crew of 40 from the Mercury Bay Boating Club in Whitianga. The KZ1 was given the nickname of the Big Boat or Big Beauty by financial backer, Sir Michael Fay. Many saw the size and wide deck gave the boat a nick-name of The aircraft carrier.

KZ1 prompted American skipper Dennis Conner to build a catamaran Stars & Stripes (US-1). Conner won the challenge, but most of the battle was fought in court. The KZ1 is now on display near the National Maritime Museum in Auckland.

Wäiski was built in 1911 as a German passenger steamer Oldenburg. She sailed the Baltic with many names and owners and was laid up at Stockholm for a long time until bought to Finland in 1989. It was rebuilt as a 650 seat floating restaurant was again laid up, this time at Naantali. She was sold in auction in 1994 and came to Helsinki in 1997 and has been at its current berth since 1999.

Brazil Maru, a 10,100 dwt cargo and passenger liner, was launched on July 10, 1954. She made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Brazil on July 30, 1954. In November 1972, the Brazil Maru retired as Japanese emigration to South America declined. She then served as a maritime pavilion called the "Toba Brazil Maru" at Toba from 1974 until 1996, when it was sold to China.

Traditionsschiff Typ Frieden, originally named Dresden, was built in 1956-57 by VEB Warnowwerft, Warnemünde, DDR, as the fifth of the fifteen Frieden class cargo ships. She was delivered to the Deutsche Seereederei, Rostock, on 27. July 1958. On 11.November 1969 she was taken out of service as there was found to be considerable defects in her machinery. On 13. June 1970 she was opened to public as museum ship and today is part of the Rostock Shipbuilding and Maritime Museum (Rostocker Schiffbau- und Schifffahrtsmuseums).

Defence trials ship Planet of the Ozeanographische Forschungsanstalt der Bundeswehr (OFBw). She was launched in 1965 and entered service in 1967. In 2003 she was withdrawn from service and in 2006 she sold to a buyer in St. Vincent and Grenadines to be converted to a yacht but that didn't happen and since April 2007 she has been preserved at Wilhelmshaven.

The SS Keewatin is a passenger liner that once sailed between Port Arthur / Fort William and Port McNicoll. Built by Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Scotland as Hull No. 453, the Keewatin was launched 06 July 1907 and entered service in the following year. She ran continuous for almost 60 seasons, being retired in 1966. The ship is now the Keewatin Maritime Museum, and is permanently docked in Douglas, Michigan.

This replica steamboat was demolished in July 2008 after it deteriorated beyond repair. It was built in 1981-83 to replace the original Julius C. Wilkie steamboat which burned to the ground at this same spot in March 1981.

Both the original and the replica boat served as a steamboat museum and hosted various parties, weddings, and gatherings. The replica was closed to the public in 2006 for safety reasons. Efforts to raise enough money to repair the boat stalled, and the city council eventually voted to demolish it.

PT Boats were a variety of motor torpedo boat (hull classification symbol "PT", for "Patrol Torpedo"), a small, fast vessel used by the United States Navy in World War II to attack larger surface ships. The PT boat squadrons were nicknamed "the mosquito fleet".

PT 658 is at the Naval Reserve Center, Portland, OR. PT 659 is at the Oregon Military Mus., Portland, OR. The PT 658 is being restored, using some parts from the '659. Save the PT Boat, Inc. and PT Boat Restoration, Inc. are involved in the restoration. The 659 boat is to be moved to the Fort Vancouver National Historical Site in Vancouver Washington.

This 131 feet long wooden schooner sank in a storm on April 9, 1894. It was made of white oak in 1876 in nearby Manitowoc. It's remains were discovered in 1990 during preparations for building a new marina. It was raised in 1992 and is displayed in a nearby park along the shore of Lake Michigan.

Maillé-Brézé (D627) is a T 47 class destroyer (escorteur d'escadre) of the French Navy. She was built by Arsenal de Lorient in Lorient, commissioned on 4 May 1957 and named after French admiral Jean Armand de Maillé-Brézé (1619–1646).

In 1988 she was decommissioned and became a museum ship in Nantes.

CCGS Alexander Henry is a former Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker and currently a museum ship preserved at the Marine Museum of the Great Lakes in Kingston, Ontario.

Built at Port Arthur Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Port Arthur, she was commissioned into the Department of Transport's Marine Service as CGS Alexander Henry using the prefix "Canadian Government Ship". She was transferred in 1962 to the newly-created Canadian Coast Guard and is named after Alexander Henry, an 18th Century British explorer and fur trapper.

CCGS Alexander Henry served her entire coast guard career on the Great Lakes. She was launched in 1958, commissioned in 1959, and retired from service in 1984 after CCGS Samuel Risley entered service.

CSS Acadia is a former hydrographic surveying and oceanographic research ship of the Hydrographic Survey of Canada and its successor the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

The Acadia served Canada for more than five decades from 1913-1969, including being commissioned twice into military service for the Royal Canadian Navy during both world wars. She is currently a historic museum ship stationed in Halifax Harbour at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic; she is the only ship still afloat that served the Royal Canadian Navy in both World Wars.

Retaining her original engines, boilers and little-changed accommodations, she is one of the best preserved Edwardian ocean steamships in the world and a renowned example of Canada's earliest scientific prowess in the fields of hydrography and oceanography.

The USCGC Sundew (WLB-404) is a 180-foot (55 m) sea going buoy tender (WLB). An Iris, or C-class vessel, it was built by Marine Ironworks and Shipbuilding Corporation in Duluth, Minnesota. Sundew's preliminary design was completed by the United States Lighthouse Service and the final design was produced by Marine Iron and Shipbuilding Corporation in Duluth. On 29 November 1943 the keel was laid. It was launched on 8 February 1944 and commissioned on 24 August 1944. The original cost for the hull and machinery was $861,589.

Sundew is one of 39 original 180-foot (55 m) seagoing buoy tenders built between 1942-1944. All but one of the original tenders, the USCGC Ironwood (WLB-307), were built in Duluth. Like all of these tenders, the Sundew was named after a plant, in this case the sundew, a carnivorous plants from the genus Drosera.

In 1958, the Sundew was assigned to Charlevoix, Michigan, and the following November helped in the rescue of two survivors from the SS Carl D. Bradley when it sank in a storm on Lake Michigan 47 miles (76 km) west-northwest of Charlevoix. The Sundew remained at Charlevoix until 1980.

Sundew served 60 years for the Coast Guard and was decommissioned and retired on May 27, 2004. As part of the decommissioning, the vessel was given to the city of Duluth, its last home port, to be used as a museum ship. The services provided by the Sundew were taken up by USCGC Alder (WLB 216).

The SS William A Irvin is a lake freighter which sailed as a bulk freighter on the Great Lakes as part US Steel's lake fleet. She was flagship of the company fleet from her launch in the depths of the depression in 1938 until 1975 and then as a general workhorse of the fleet until her retirement in 1978. Currently, this queen of the silver stackers is resting comfortably in Duluth, Minnesota, a well maintained example of a classic laker.
